Katniss's POV
"Peeta! Stop it that tickles!" I squeal as me and Peeta roll around in the grass. He giggles and is on top of me and I look up at him and his blue eyes. "You are really ticklish." He says and I smile. He lets me sit up and I look over at him.
Before I could say something his daddy calls. "Peeta, Katniss! It's getting dark, come inside!" We do and he gives us some bread and we eat it. As I am waiting for my daddy to come home Peeta nestles into his couch so I lay next to him and lay my head on his chest. He wraps his arms around my body and I think one thing. "I don't want to loose my Peeta."
----Six Years Later----
"Shoot the groosling Katniss!" I aim with my bow and shoot the groosling. He grins with his grey eyes shining in the winter sunlight. He picks it up and puts it in our bag. He wraps his arm around my shoulder and kisses the top of my head.
Then we hear the school bell ring and the work whistle. "Oh, gotta go Katniss and so do you. I'll see ya and Prim after school." He hugs me and I kiss his stubbly cheek. "Bye daddy, I love you." He grins. "I love you to sweetheart."
At school I sit, listening to the teacher go on about a lesson and then the emergency alarm goes off. "Guys, this is not a drill! Everyone to the square." I get up quickly, thinking about daddy and the mines, I hope it's not the mines.
I run into prims class where she is crying at her desk and I try to stay calm and I grab her hand. We run to the square by the mines and we see smoke coming from them. "Daddy." I whisper and push through the crowd of people, still holding Prims hand.
My mother comes and wraps her arms around us. "Daddy is going to be okay, I promise." We stand there in the snow watching coal dust covered miners coming out and their families hugging them close but our daddy, doesn't. People give us soup, water, bread, but we don't eat, we don't leave.
Then after two days of praying our father would come out the mines collapse and I scream, breaking down into tears. My daddy, the one who taught me how to hunt, my hunting partner, the one who would hold me if I had nightmares, my daddy.
My mother stays silent as people try to comfort us as Prim and I cry but we don't listen. When we get home my mother walks to her chair and sits, looking away from us and lets a silent tear roll down her pale cheek.
That night, I'm the one making dinner, I'm the one who helps Prim brush her teeth, I'm the one who tucks Prim in and tell her a story, and I'm the one who sings to me before I go to sleep with my fathers jacket in my arms. Tears roll down the leather and I sing the verses he just taught me through the tears.
"A-are you, are you, c-coming to the tree, where they strung up a m-man who was said m-murdered three. S-strange things did happen here n-no stranger would it be, i-if we met up at midnight in the h-hanging tree."
I smell my daddy on the leather and start singing the song again, hearing my daddy singing it with me in my head. "I-I promise daddy I-I'll take care of mommy and P-prim." And that's a promise forever and always.
