Chapter 9

Artemis was exhasted. Butler and he hadn't slept for thirteen hours, and he could no longer keep count of the hours by listening to the grandfather clock's chimes down the hall. He had Butler disable it because the counting made him even more tired than he already was. Lucky Zoey. She had been out cold since her encounter with Raven the previous morning. It was 1:00a.m. and it was Butler's turn to check on her. While he was gone, Artemis tried running the recording of Raven's voice that he had retrieved from the security feed through the computer one last time. After two and a half minutes of pointless scanning, the search turned up blank, as expected. Artemis slunk back in his chair, extremely tired, but not ready to admit defeat. It wasn't likely that he ever would have been ready to do that. Butler stifled a heavy yawn upon entering study.

"Have you found anything?" He asked hopefully. Artemis shook his head sadly.

"Nothing at all. He has most likely made up this Trevor Raven name. I have done everything! I have scanned his voice pattern, unscrambled the letters of his name to make new ones. It's difficult without a presice name or even an image. I have no idea what he looks like, let alone where he is!" Artemis exclaimed, supressing the urge to pick up something nearby and throw it angrily at the wall. Brute force and loss of temper would not solve this dilemma. It would mean that Trevor Raven had gotten the better of him. That he had won.

Butler gestured for Artemis to take a look at the high-quality video camera feed that they had installed in Zoey's room twelve hours ago. "She's having nightmares again." Artemis glanced forlornly at the girl who was thrashing about in the bed and crying loudly. After a few moments she stopped the chaotic flailing and curled up into a ball under the covers, sobbing quietly into the sheets. Artemis felt a sharp pang in his chest, a pang that he often felt a few years ago when he saw his grief-ridden mother who was distraught with the loss of losing Artemis' father, Artemis senior.

"I feel terrible for her." Artemis admitted sadly. Butler nodded in agreement and said,

"I wish there was something I could do." They both stood there in slilence for a minute or two before Artemis bodly turned to face Butler. He looked up at the giant of a man and said,

"I want to go see her." Butler shook his head sternly down at his teenage employer.

"No. You can't. You don't know what you're asking for." Butler told him, but as usual, Artemis would listen to anyone if he was determined to do something.

"Maybe I can get some memories out of her. Perhaps the memories will supress the nightmares." He suggested, but still Butler refused to let him out of the study.

"I advise against it. They aren't exactly nightmares anymore, it's much more than even you know, Artemis." Butler insisted, but then he stopped when he saw Artemis' flickering blue eyes. He knew those eyes well. It was the same pair of eyes that he saw in the mirror every day upon awakening. Butler had sworn to protect Artemis with his life exactly fourteen years, eight months and two hundred and fifteen days ago, and now his own responsibility had taken a similar oath on Zoey's behalf. He would protect her as well.

"I have to." Artemis replied firmly, he obviously wasn't going to give up asking until Butler allowed him to pass. After a few minutes of standing his ground without any sign of giving way anytime soon, Butler sighed relentedly and stepped aside for Artemis to leave the room.

"Alright." He mumbled softly, but it didn't matter anyways because Artemis was already halfway there, sprinting down the hall faster than Butler ever would have thought possible for him.
