Sardonic Christmas

Once again, it is that strange time of year,

Where all of us appear, to be full of cheer,

We fail to remember, all of last year's debts,

Our over indulgencies, and toxic cigarettes,

As the spell of festive madness, fills the air,

Greedy retailers grab coins, without a care,

Silver tinsel glitters, and pretty lights glow,

Strangers meet and kiss, under mistletoe,

Drinking fine spirits, we sing and we dance,

No thoughts of Jesus, while in this trance,

No thoughts for the needy, nor of the poor,

With drink in hand, we overindulge once more,

Ignorantly celebrating, a long forgotten event,

Judging its success, by how much we've spent,

Though the true cost of it, has yet to be seen,

Chucking out small trees, that used to be green,

I've misinterpreted the occasion, I hear you cry,

Failing to convince me, I'm touched that you try,

But restless and wanting, your party to begin,

The weak justifying arguments, begin to rain in,

You say it's an occasion, for all the family to meet,

Surely this should be done, at least once a week?

But this is just a cynical poem, so no reason to stall,

Go have your party, merry Christmas to one and all.

Merry Christmas.
