Louis’ POV

It’s been a month now. Liam and I know there are only two months left for these three girls lives. There is no evidence that can lead us anywhere. The last three bodies that were found were floating in a nearby harbor while the three girls before that were found in a different part of London in a park. The situations make no sense. This case has been keeping me at the station all day and night. I sigh looking over old files and records when someone places a cup of tea on my desk.

“Drink. You need it.You look like shit.” Liam smiles and I try my best to return it.

“I know. It’s just this case...”

“It’s not a dead end Louis.” His face goes hard and I nod not wanting to upset him any more.

This case is personal for Li. He has more invested in this than any of the rest of us do. He is just as determined if not more than I am in finding these three men. He sits next to me removing the workload off of my desk and into his lap.

“Liam we’ve been over these files for months now. There’s nothing new.” I sigh taking a sip from my Yorkshire tea.

“I know Lou. But maybe we missed something...” He trails off flipping through the caseloads.

“Liam we’ve caught everything. There’s no distinct pattern except for the fact that the number three is a recurring pattern. Three girls, Three months, Three initials, the number Three imbranded into the skin and more than likely Three killers. That’s all we have Liam.”

“Exactly Louis but what if...” Liam trails off and stands quickly with the files of each murder sight in hand.

He walks up to the large map of England and grabs a marker making dots on certain areas. He’s speaking to himself and I’m trying to keep up but I can’t. Liam finishes marking on the map and takes a step back staring at it. I stare too and my mouth drops.

“Li...”

“Every sight where the victims were found...” He trails off once again. “Louis they’re making a number three! That’s why there was no specific area hit. They are trying to form the number three with each murder sight.”

“Liam you’re a fucking genius!” I smile at the map and shake my head.

How did we miss this? A whole year. Four different sets of three girls. And now we find it. I look over at Liam and see he’s sitting back down at the desk rummaging through some more  files hoping to find something new. I sit down next to him and watch as the wheels in his head turn hoping to keep this new evidence streak going. He stops and stands back up looking at the map.

“Louis. If we can pinpoint it. We could find out where their next sight would be...” He trails off again and I stay seated. Another detective walks in and places a stack on my desk.

“What is this?”

“Chief said you could use it.” The guy shrugs and walks away.

I open the file and see something about a few fires that have been set. Apparently the fires are spread throughout all of London. And the places are all random. No specific chain of restaurants or clothing stores. Just random buildings. But that’s not what caused me to drop my tea on the floor and hold the paper up to my face.

“Li... Liam!” I yell and he looks over at me with doe eyes.

“What is it Lou?” He walks quickly and I show him the paper.

It’s a blurry print out. A crap security camera caught it. You would think this day and age... Serious time Louis. I shake my head and stare at the photo again. There’s a figure in the photo. I’m guessing a he by his build. His face is covered and he’s in all black. His silhouette is scary in itself. But out of all of that it’s what was behind him. What was burning. It’s a building. About thirty to forty-five minutes from the office. And it has large flames forming a three on the side of it. I look over to Liam whose mouth is wide open and eyes matching.

“Liam I think we need to make our way to that building. And I think we need to do it now.” He nods and we grab our coats leaving our office.

We arrive to the burned building and take a look at the sight. There’s nothing left but grim and ash. The wind blows causing some ruble to sweep into mine and Liam’s eyes making them water. I wipe them and I could have sworn I saw someone out of the corner of my eye, but when I looked again whoever or whatever it was was gone. We step around certain things hoping to find a little piece of evidence. But to our luck we found nothing. I sigh and run my fingers through my hair.

“Li there’s nothing here. We should just go back...”

“Wait.” He shushes me and bends down picking something up. He stands back up and is holding a chain with a compass looking medallion on it.

“Well if we didn’t have anything before we sure as hell have something now.” I hold the chain up to my face and smile.

Maybe this case won’t be a dead end after all.
