Welcome to California

The drive leaving little, rainy Oregon was bittersweet, but I will admit I'm excited for the sun. I'm excited for the sun, the ocean, and getting away.

I wouldn't mind leaving so much if it weren't for mom, but she has business trips booked all of summer. I sure will miss her. Nicholas, my eight year old brother, and I both miss seeing her and my dad together, but everything happens for a reason.

After the divorce, dad decided it was best for us to be with mom during the school year, and for her to keep everything. Everything except a spare coffee table, his favorite recliner, and the love seat that was down in the basement, that is. He pays his child support monthly, and always gives us a ring on the telephone at least three times a week. He may have moved another state away, but honestly he's trying his very hardest and is a great dad.

And now, Nicholas and I get to spend all summer long with him. I'm a bit nervous judt to be around so much testosterone, but I'm also very excited.

Happy thoughts filled my mind as I climbed into the driver seat of our black range rover. Being sixteen, almost seventeen, with a license basically means I get to drive all the way to Malibu. Which wouldn't be that bad if I didnt have to put up with Nicholas whining about something every ten seconds.

Speaking of the little rascal, he climbed into the passenger seat finally.

Mom came over and kissed our cheeks, "I want you guys to be very careful, okay? Nicholas I expect you to check in with me every hour on the way down there. In fact call me, so I can talk to Beatrice since she's driving."

We both nodded.

With her throwing one final bag in the back, she came up to Nicholas's side of the car and dropped a little lunch tote. His eyes widened with happiness. Boys these days.

"In case you get hungry," she winks. "Share with Bea though or I will come through the phone and put you in a corner and ground you before you can even say sorry."

Nicholas frowned with disappointment. Ha, sucker, has to share with big sis and he's suddenly nnot so hungry anymore. Go figure.

"Okay," he sighed out and looked at the floor board. I nudged his arm and nodded towards mom who was holding one last thing: a pet crate.

Inside the crate was the fluffiest bunny you could imagine. Her name is Penelope and she is a blue coloring with one white ear. With mom being on business trips, that leaves Nicholas and I to take care of the only pet we own, Penelope. We use to have a turtle but unfortunately, Frankfurt died.

Nicholas carefully held onto the cage as mom opened his door and gave him yet another hug. She kissed his forehead, leaving a sheer lipstick print. Nicholas immediately whined and scrubbed it off.

"Hey mister, you be nice or I'll let Beatrice have all the snacks," she smiled at him as she ruffled up his scruffy hair.

She gave me one last hug and kiss as well, and finally
I put the key in the ignition and we were off.

Oregon's trees slowly faded into a deserty farmland. It was overwhelmingly filled with cattle and smelled horrible. Past the cattle fields, big highways and a small sign that read "Welcome to California" with the state flower in the bottom right corner.
