Chapter 2:
Finally the bell rang and I was off to lunch, to find Clayton. Clayton was waiting at the end of the hallway for me, he looked kind of upset. ''What's wrong?'' I asked worried. ''Nothing.'' I didn't believe it, I knew him all to well. I decided that maybe now isn't the best time to bring up Colton. Then it hit me, I knew what would make Clayton feel better.
''How about we go drive to Rosemaries Bakery for lunch?'' I gave Clayton a big smile. He smiled. ''You're so pretty when you smile Mae, you shouldn't let people take it away from you.'' He was always so sweet. I loved Clayton, he was like the big brother I never had. Always taking care of little Maelene. ''I know Clay, I know.''
Clayton and I walked to his truck quietly. It was an awkward silence for both of us the whole way to the bakery. Although the bakery was only five minutes away. Clayton loved this bakery, it was his grandmothers. His grandma is a very kind hearted woman and has always looked at for us. If any of us were in trouble, she was always there to lend her hand to us.
''You ready to go in?'' he asked. I hadn't even noticed that we were there. "Of course.'' I smiled.
As we walked in his grandmother greeted both of us with an enormous smile. ''How are my two favorite teens?'' ''We're great grandma,'' Clayton smiled, '' but we're kind of in a hurry.'' She understood and gave us our orders, she never made us pay but I always offered. She always told me something along the line of, ''silly girl, havent i told you that your family? and family doesnt pay.'' I would always reply with ''thanks Grandma Rose'' and smile kindly. Clayton was ordering, he knew what I wanted just like I knew what he wanted. We always get the same thing when we come to Grandma Rose's. He got a Red Velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting and I got a bagel with cream cheese.
As we headed back to school Clayton finally broke the silence. ''How 'bout you and I ditch the rest of the day?'' I looked to him as he watched the road. ''Ill get you home before curfew.'' He added. I thought about it before answering. ''How about we go see a movie?'' I suggested. ''Sure.'' He looked at me and smiled as he made a U-turn and turned the truck around. The movie theater was 15 minutes down the road.
When we got there we chose a random movie, i'm not quite sure what it was called. As we watched it I noticed it was about a girl who was in love with some guy and he broke her heart. Great. Clayton brought me to a movie about my life. But then the girl found a new guy, and it was no longer my life storie. Why can't my life be a movie like this? It would be far better.
"Mae, Maelene wake up.'' I heard Clayton whispering, '' Maelene the movies over, lets go down by the lake?'' Then I oppened my eyes and seen that I had slept through the rest of the movie. ''Sure, lets go.'' I replied tiredly while whiping my eyes. I wonder what happened at the end of the movie?
Once we arrived at the lake it was almost night time. The sun was falling behind the mountains slowly and the stars were starting to show. That's whats so beautiful about living in a small town, theres no lights so you can actually see all the stars. Clayton opened up the tailgate of the trunk and we sat down. I rested my head on Claytons shoulder.
''Whats happened to us?" I said sadly. "What do you mean?'' he sounded confused. "I mean we used to be bestfriends, no awkward silences or..'' I paused, ''Or anything, now were like strangers?'' He looked at the sun as it was setting. ''Mae..." "Yes Clay?" I replied. "I didn't know you thought that we were drifting apart. I'm sorry.'' He put his head in his arms. "It just I don't like that he hurt you, your my bestfriend." I leaned over and put my arms around him. " Clayton there isn't anything you can do?'' I said assuringly. He looked up at me angrily. He was confused and hurt, I could see it in his eyes.
"NO." He said firmly, "You just wont let me do anything.'' Not this again. When Colton broke my heart Clayton wanted to fight him but I told him not to because I still cared. Why can he not see this and just stop? Doesn't he know he's hurting me?
"Clay, he doesn't need you to..." "Mae! Im trying to protect you!" he cut me off, "Why can't you see this and allow me to?!'' Why is he yelling at me? I didn't do anything. I could feel my eyes beginning to water. I turned and looked the opposite way as a tear rolled down my face.
"Please don't cry, i'm so sorry." He said as he pulled me into his arms. "Mae I didn't mean it."
It felt good for him to hold me. Before whenever something happened he would hold me like this. Whenever I needed my bestfriend, he was there. The way his stong arms felt around me was more than comforting. I don't know what I would do without me bestfriend.
"Mae, your too beautiful to cry,'' he whispered into my ear, '' so let me see that smile.'' He moved a lock of my hair behind my ear.
That's another thing I love about him, he always told me I was beautiful. He told me that I was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, even when I frown. I don't think i'm all that pretty. Im five foot four, i have long thick dark brown hair, and big brown eyes. My bodies not all that bad, I have decent boobs and a decent butt. But I would never consider myself beautiful.
"Thank Clayton." I smiled as I looked up. He then whiped my tears away. Such a sweet boy.I noticed it was finally dark, so I then escaped his arms and layed down in the trucks bed to look up at the stars. He looked down at me before joining me. We layed there quietly until it was time to take me home.
I got home around 10:30pm. Mom and dad were sitting in the kitchen, dad was going throught bills and mom was doing the dishes. ''Hun, i know you weren't at school after lunch,'' mom sighed, "were you out with Clayton?'' She already knows where I was, this isn't the first time I ditched. "Yeah mom." She was on her last dish and looked like she was thinking about something. "Sweety you know this years important for college?" she looked up at me, "you know I don't mind you taking a break with Clay but you need to keep your priorities staright and get your work done.'' I shook my head yes as i turned to walk up the stairs to my room.
"Mae Bear?" Dad looked up from the bills as I turned to look at him. "Yes daddy?'' I replied.
"Aren't you going to eat your dinner?'' We both looked over to my plate. "No, i'm not hungry and i'm really tired," I paused as i looked up the stairs, "so I think i'm just going to go to bed?" My dad could see that something was wrong but he didn't want to force me to say anything. "Alright dear, goodnight." he said with a smile. I smiled back, ''Night daddy."
Mom is the kind of woman who always kept the house clean. Mom has always taken care of me and my dad. I don't know what we would do without her. She kept this family together. Whenever dad is stressed mom is there, whenever I need help, mom is there. I can go to her for anything. Unlike me, my mom has medium length dirty blonde hair, bright blue eyes, she's five foot seven, and has a very nice shaped body. Dad on the other hand is what keeps us going. He and I are also very close, he always seems to know when somethings wrong with me. He's five foot nine, black hair, brown eyes, and very strong.
When I got to my room I put my pajamas on and layed in my bed. I noticed my stuffed monkey that i've had since I was a baby at the end of the bed. I grabbed it and cuddled with while thinking about how bad my heart hurt. I still couldn't understand why Colton broke my heart and why Clayton couldn't understand. I began to cry quietly. I clinched onto my monkey and cried myself to sleep.
