"Mae!" A voice called. "Coming!" A young blonde looked up from her book and replied to her mother's call. "Mae, dear." Her mother said. "Go on and brush your teeth and get ready for bed." "But it's not even 8.." Young Mae replied. "Yes, dear, I know... but Lily is coming over.." Her voice was full of sympathy and worry. Lily was a friend of her mom's, and she wasn't exactly aware that her friend happened to have a child. "Oh." Mae snorted. She hated the fact that she didn't exist, at least, in the eyes of Lily that is. She walked sluggishly away to brush her teeth, and change into her pajamas. Then she went into her room, and looked out of her window. "The great storm!" She gasped. She rushed back to her bed, where her open book lay waiting. She scooped it up and rappidly flipped through its pages. "Page..." she mumbled as she rushed to find it. "47!" She declared. Satisfaction and relief flooded her as she put her finger on the spot. She looked at the page to see a giant grey cloud, unnaturally streaked with oranges and reds. She looked up to the sky outside, which perfectly mirrored the picture in her book. "I knew it!" She screeched with glee. "It's finally come!!"
Mae knew that her relatives and ansestors had been counting the years, and her mom had been the one to break the tradition. She had decided that it was nonsense, and that her child had more important things to do than count the days to a fantasy storm's arrival. What her mom didn't know, was that tonight was the night, and she had decided to invite her friend, who was as clueless and close-minded as she was. Mae snarled. It made her sick that her mother didn't care, when all she had lived for was to see it. Well, I'm only 11. She thought. But if her mom didn't care and wouldn't go explore, then she would. She ran to her closet and pulled out her jacket and rainboots. She grabbed her hat, laying on the edge of her bed, and opened the window. As soon as it opened, air blasted her face, making her eyes water. She turned her head back to her room. "Let them have fun." She sneered. Though, when she turned back, fear and regret stabbed her like a knife. She felt tears forming in her eyes. "ENOUGH!" She scolded herself sharply. With one last look at her fluffy pink bed, she pushed her bad thoughts away, and jumped out of her window, into the great storm.
