TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE
Love is unavoidable. It sneaks up behind you, slithering through the cracks. One minute you're staring out the dashboard window with your hair blowing in the wind, counting the tree's passing by on the side highway; then the next, you're watching him out of the corner of your eye, biting back a smile as he grips the steering wheel, his left knee bobbing as he sings at the top of his lungs, his grin widening as his cheeks blush when he catches your lingering gaze.
The boy who you shared five messages at most with now becomes the man you can't go a day without thinking about – speaking to – knowing how his day was. The sound of his voice being your only source for a pleasant slumber; his morning messages being the fresh start of your day. Your body reacts to his touch and you begin to pick up – adapt to his mechanisms, knowing what cologne he wears the moment he embraces you in his arms and puts his sweatshirt over your head; his scent being the only comfort you seek when he's miles away in the solace of his home.
You're head over heels, creating tiny scenarios in your head; writing your own romance novel, directing your autobiographical motion picture as you put yourself to sleep. And as you're wide awake in bed at 3 A.M with the thought of him on your mind, you begin to wonder, "How in the world did I end up here?"
Your mind hits rewind and you relive every moment you two cherished, from late nights where you sat in abandoned parking lots and he turned your tan thin fingers into sharpie colored characters, to the morning you're both sneaking out of his room before his mom wakes for work, until you realize just how much you're in too deep – how you've drowned in his affection; the love he's given you. And within that moment, your bed is empty, the spot he once occupied now dented and cold – a mold of the heart you have left to carry. Suddenly, just like that, love is breakable.
