I had forgotten how comfortable that guest room bed was, but I hadn't needed to sleep on it when we were married. I started making Gavin's favorite breakfast, and I kind of smiled, and went to go get Evan up. "Wake up sweetie" I stood in the door way "Evan come on wake up" I said a little louder, and then walked to shake him, when I found it wasn't him.
"Gavin!" I yelled as I ran down the hall to his room and burst in through the door "Gavin, Gavin! Wake up Evans missing!" I yelled and he shot up and then looked beside him and let a breath of relief come out. "Calm down... I forgot, he came into my office during the storm and asked to sleep with me" I walked towards the bed, awkwardly sitting at the end, looking at the sleeping Evan laying next to his papa.
It was exceedingly cold in the room, so much so that I was shivering, Gavin held the covers up and motioned for me to crawl under, I wrapped my arms around Evan and my food accidentally brushed against Gavin's leg, causing us to jerk away from each other. It's strange how once a loving touch I had craved now sent fear into my very soul. But why fear, why not hatred or anger, I would much rather prefer that, than the thought of fear, but it's fear and I can not deny it. However seeing as thought I despise fear and hate it's very function, I moved closer to Gavin, he backed away a little, but I took his hand, and placed it on my waist. "Hilly what are you doing?" He whispered. "I... I... I don't know" I let go of Evan and rolled out from under his hand and out of the bed, out of the room... And I just kept going...
So here I was walking around in rain boots, a rain coat and a large umbrella over my head as I strolled through the streets of London, hardly anyone was out and about, leaving no media to haunt me. There was a little store that held one of the few good memories I had of my mother.
"Mama, can I have the rabbit?" I asked and she looked at the stuffed toy in my hand, I expected her to call it a dusty old thing and rip it out of my hands telling me to move along. "Of course dear" she smiled sweetly and handed the shop keeper 5 pounds.
I let a tear slip, that was practically the only good memory I have of my wretched mother and it was just because she bought me a stupid stuffed rabbit... Little did I know she had cancer that was the only reason she had even let me get it. I walked in to the store and it smelled exactly the same, it was now a book store, and long forgotten were the dusty shelves full of antiques and now filled with the wretched twilight saga. "Can I help you miss?" The shop keeper asked "oh no, I'm just looking" I walked towards the back and then spotted Amelia. I quickly backed away trying to get out of there as fast as I could, but I knocked over a book onto the floor which created a rather large crashing noise and she saw me. "Hillary dear, I didn't know you were in London.... Or the continent actually" "my father..." "Oh yes I heard of that, unfortunate that is... Does Gavin know..." "Yes" "oh you two have spoken?" "You could say so" "well good I know it was an awful divorce and I did so hope you two could retain some sort of friendship from it, because dear, I do so enjoy your company and the holidays just haven't been the same since you two split up. Speaking of which what are you doing for Christmas? Charles and I would love to have you" Gavin's mother just went on and on and I was slowly cracking... no it wasn't slow I was the titanic, her voice was so kind and I remembered how much I adored her and wished for years she had been my mother, even with Gavin and I's problems, she always included me.
"Mum! Dad! I'm home!" Gavin yelled walking into their country house "Gavin, we've been waiting, how was the snow" his mother said rushing down the stairs not even looking and then she saw me and stopped. "Who is this?" She was smiling and a great relief washed over me "Hillary Windsor" "oh yes Duchess Hillary of Kent" "she goes by Hillary mum" "is she staying for Christmas?" "If that's alright, Gavin just invited me out of the blue" "of course it's alright, the more the merrier" she opened up her arms and hugged me. To me in spirit his mother was Christmas, the twinkle in her eyes and the joy in her words, I almost expected her to say HoHoHo and asked me what I wanted for Christmas. "Now Gavin why don't you show Hillary the green lady room, I have to go get the gingerbread house set up, your cousins will be here eventually... They insisted on taking a sleigh instead of a car" she laughed and a golden glow was around her. "Don't look at her too long, you'll see elf ears" Gavin whispered in my ear making me jump and he laughed taking my hand leading me up the staircase "you aren't actually serious... Are you?" I asked with wonder "no, but she acts like one of St. Nicks little helpers this time of the year... This is going to be fun, if you half believed that my cousins are going to have you believing she can talk to reindeer and can decorate a tree with the touch of a single finger" he laughed opening the door to the room and then pointed towards the ceiling "hey look mistletoe" "there's nothing there" I laughed as I looked at the blank ceiling and then back at him, where he held a spring of mistletoe over his head "you naughty boy... You lucky I like you so much"
"Mrs. Hillsborough, Gavin and I aren't divorced" came out of my mouth and she stopped her rambling on about how much she had missed me, which was heartfelt and she obviously meant it, but now she was staring at me like I was some sort of disease "dear I think your quite ill and should go home, that is not something to joke about, for three years you and Gavin were on the Telly saying awful things about each other to get that divorce" "the paperwork didn't go through, they have no signed document in the entire country of England that we are divorced" "let's go to lunch and talk of this matter" she took my arm setting her book down and rushed me outside, and across the street to a loud and noisy cafe where we took a booth in the back "does he know this?" She looked very unpleased and uncomfortable with the situation "yes he knows I told him as soon as I found out" "well what are you two doing about it?" "The judge I spoke too refused to divorce us unless we lived together for 12 months" "that's outrageous, does the judge know who you are?" "I made it very clear who we were and that we were in fact in Kent at that moment and political power we held and that's when we got the 12 months" "so..." "So we've been living together" I said and then looked at my fork and she raised an eyebrow "what else, I promise I won't be mad" "I think you will" "it'll be worse if you don't tell me right now" "we have a son" she stared at me unable to move or say anything and I became very frightened "Mrs. Hillsborough if you don't say something I will run outside right now and leave" she didn't say anything and I started to get up and she grabbed my arm "I assume Gavin knows" "their together right now"
