Stone cold. Stone cold. You're dancing with her while I'm staring at my phone...
I had Stone Cold by Demi Lovato on repeat as I sat in the cold chair with my bare body exposed as cold liquid was rubbed across my chest. The feel of it made me tense up a bit. The doctor examined me and he looked a little puzzled as he continued to move his stethoscope across my chest.
"Hmmm that's odd." Dr. Caines stated in a bewildered tone.
"Umm. Is everything okay doctor?" I asked becoming a bit nervous as I watched his facial expressions.
"Well Heaven, I can't find a heart beat." Dr. Caines said as he continued to search for a beat.
Dr. Caines stepped out of the doctor's office and when he came back 4 other doctors followed behind him. They all drew their attention to the monitor that displayed the state of the mechanical heart that had been installed in my chest 2 decades ago.
"It looks as though the MH is beginning to lose it's strength." Dr. Batterman said as nurse Toote and nurse King took notes.Dr. Solano came close to me and picked up my hand to see if he could feel my pulse in my wrist. To everyone's dismay, there was no pulse. The doctors then huddled around and began to discuss what they could possibly do to find a heartbeat and pulse.
After what felt like an eternity of me sitting down waiting to hear the verdict they had come to, the other doctors walked out and Dr. Caines wrote me a prescription.
After getting dressed, he walked me to his main office to explain the situation to me.
"Ms. Smith, as you are aware, you are the first person that we have ever implanted the MH in. You are indeed a medical miracle. However, it seems as though the MH is getting old and tired. You've changed the batteries about 40 times in your life. While we would usually suggest replacing the current MH with a new MH, it is not recommended.
The chances of you dying on the operating table are very high. The conclusion that my team and I have come to is that you need to find a heart donor. Your body has done extremely well working without a real heart but it can no longer be that way. In the next year, it is estimated that you will collapse about 10 times so relax, continue to drink water, eat healthy and take your vitamins and this new medication. Your next scheduled appointment isn't until next month. In the meantime, begin looking for a donor."
"Sigh, thank you Dr. Caines." I said as I grabbed my things and walked out of the office.
As I gazed down at my phone I started to become light headed.
"Hey there, aren't you the beautiful young lady who almost killed me for the apple sauce?" Shawn, my crush asked.
I forced myself to look up and smile as my cheeks burned from redness. I began to sweat profusely and things around the room started to spin.
"I'm sorry. Did I say something wrong? Are you okay?" Shawn asked in a panic.
"Oh my god. Nurse! Nurse! Help!"
