chapter one ; eve of terror

Our lives are far from perfect, but at least we try. We strive to achieve success so that we can live out our lives comfortably. We push ourselves to our limits when facing something in our path. But perfection is far from attainable. We are flawed creatures, distorted by greed, impulses, and hatred. It's what causes us to steal, cheat, and even kill.

When you love someone, it's easy to find a beauty in those flaws, that is until they end up hurting you. After the class discussion on character weaknesses in Creative Writing, Alexa couldn't help noticing the different imperfections in the people around her as she sat in the booth at the Asia Palace.

She took note of the young girl at the front desk staring at the take-out menu, eyes wide as she stared at the array of daunting choices, her waiter who stammered each time he approached a customer and his shaking hands as he delivered them their meals, and the lewd man drooling over each passing woman despite the beautiful one in front of him, who was oblivious to her companion's narrowed vision. Her eyes fell upon the empty seat in front of her, the void speaking for itself another flaw.

She'd been stood up, yet she felt nothing but tired. Breathing out a sigh, the Reynolds girl quietly paid the check and slipped out of the booth with a silent shame. Alexa wasn't surprised this happened, and as she thought about it, she couldn't help but wonder if that was one of her own flaws. She was too lenient on Connor. Despite the numerous times he had showed up late to one of their dates or on the several occasions in which he'd give her a flimsy excuse for his actions, she always found herself forgiving him. It was as if they were in this never ending cycle of constant disappointment and tolerance, though they never were the perfect couple most people made them out to be.

"Some anniversary," Alexa mumbled to herself as she rummaged through her purse for her car keys. All she wanted to do was to get the hell out of that parking lot, desperate to fall asleep and wake up as if it had all been another nightmare, just like she did every time Connor did something like this.

"Alexa."

Her body went rigid at the sound of his voice, his soft tones sending a chill through her immobile body. It didn't slip her mind the way he enunciated every syllable in her name, something she had learned he only did when he knew she may be cold to him. Letting out a slow breath, Alexa turned around to face the boy, holding her head up high as her face stoned over. She remained silent as she scowled at him.

"Alexa, I am so sorry," he breathed, his hand running through his warm brown locks. She focused her sights on the center of his nose, refusing him the chance to lock his soft green eyes with her own. "Babe, I.. I know I'm late to dinner and I'm so sorry. I tried to get here on time, I promise you that, but my car...," he broke off as he took a tentative step toward her, stopping in defeat as she took an equally small step back. "Alexa, please say something."

The girl instantly felt the heat rise in her cheeks as she bit her lip. She wanted to scream at him, to make him understand how she was so sick of him constantly doing this, but she could never bring herself to do it, not even now. She felt so humiliated as she stood there, fighting back the urge to throw the biggest tantrum in the middle of the parking lot. She was just plain tired of having to constantly go through this with him.

"You're over an hour late, Connor," Alexa whispered, her arms hanging limply at her sides as she stood in front of him. "I waited for you and then had dinner by myself for our anniversary," she breathed as she finally raised her eyes to his. She shook her head as he gazed solemnly at her, "We've been together for two years Connor. Don't you think I deserve better than this?"

Rubbing small circles into her temples, Alexa chewed her lip as he remained silent. Their arguments always seemed to dwindle down to this, both waiting for the other to do something. The never ending cycle. Her friends Emma and Riley would always ask why she stayed with him in spite of all of the hell he put her through, and each time she would always tell them there was a way they could work it out, that she had to believe it. It's why each time they simply walked away, not bothering to deal with the broken pieces laid out in front of them. "We'll just deal with this in the morning," she murmured tiredly, her voice breaking the silence as she swiftly turned on her heel and walked back towards her car.

The moment she arrived home, Alexa was greeted by Alec bounding down the steps, the sight of her beloved puppy instantly warming her heart after the night's events. "You're not gonna stand me up tonight," she cooed as she planted small pecks on the jet black fur between his vivid blue eyes. The girl gathered the little bundle in her arms as she made her way over to the freezer in search of some black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream, her go-to snack when she needed an emotion cool down.

Settling herself down on the couch after waddling over with her treat for the night and puppy at her heels, the girl frowned as she failed in her search for the remote. "Tyler, do you know where the remote to the tv is?" she hollered, hoping her foster brother would be able to hear her from the living room. Alexa paused after a moment when all she received was silence, "Tyler?"

Pushing herself off of the floor from where she was digging through the couch cushions, the brunette wandered up the stairs to the boy's room only to discover it empty. "Of course you're out. You're probably somewhere with Nina hoping you get the chance to shove your tongue down her throat," she mumbled bitterly to herself as she closed his door. As much as Alexa was friends with Lakewood's infamous Nina Patterson, she hated the fact that she could manipulate Tyler, and even Connor, into doing anything she wished. Padding past the empty rooms of her parents' and little brother Jeremy's, Alexa had come to the conclusion that she and Alec were left on their lonesome in the rather large estate.

Making her way back downstairs, Alexa paused as she saw a note resting on the granite counter top that she hadn't noticed before. Reading its contents to herself, the girl barely noticed her hand curl upon the paper's edges, the note now a crumpled heap in her fist.

Spinning on her heels, Alexa sprinted up the steps and down the hall to her room. Almost frantically, she rifled through her closet before she found her black jacket and dark yoga pants. She was running out of time, and if she didn't hurry, she would miss her chance. Grabbing her phone as she left her room, Alexa raced down the steps and out the door, into the night on the streets of Lakewood.
