“Yes, a woman…” Al stopped midsentence, looked at me and paled, “Lacy, I didn’t mean it like that.”
Like what? “What’s that? No don’t tell me, I don’t want to know.”
“Lacy…” He put his hand on my shoulder. I shrugged it off and turned my back to him, “Just leave me alone!”
“Lacy, be reasonable, you’ve never acted like a shallow girl before, why start now?”
I’m being shallow? Not trusting myself to speak, I strode passed them out into the shop. I took a deep breath beside a rack of black fabric. All kinds of silks, satins, and even fleeces draped themselves over the display, mirroring my mood perfectly.
“Miss Lacy? May I speak with you?” Cole implored, coming out from behind a stack of fabric bolts hesitantly.
I nodded, and he stopped beside me, not saying a word. For which I’m grateful. I reminded myself firmly, after that fiasco in there I don’t need to talk about myself if I’m shallow.
“He is a fool you know, you are not shallow.” Cole remarked softly. I looked up at him, but he continued to study the fabric in front of us.
“No he’s right, I was being stupid I don’t…”
“Lacy, I know exactly what happened in there, I understand it perfectly. You didn’t necessarily want him to drop to his knee and propose to you but you did not wish to hear what you did. I’m guessing your husband was the same way? Not knowing what he had, and dismissing you for his own silly reasons?”
I didn’t say a word, I couldn’t, what would I say? He was right, Reese had married me because his parents and mine had been friends, and ours was most definitely not a marriage made for love.
“I take by your silence I have hit at least close to home. I apologize for my frankness, I just wish for you to know that he did not say those things knowledgably.” I looked up at him and frowned, why was he doing this?
He returned it to me with his own lopsided grin, “You’re wondering why I would be assisting that oaf when I clearly don’t care for him.” He pulled a sheaf of black satin down from the top of the display, “It’s simple really, I hate to see a lovely lady upset over such a fool.”
“Thank you.”
He froze momentarily, his expression one of surprise that quickly melted into pleasure. He bowed at the waist, “You’re most welcome my lady.”
