Merlin: The Great Dragon's Last Call

Chapter 3

Merlin POV: 12 Years AD, April 6th.

I woke up this morning to treat some patients with a fever. When I walked to where the patients were I found Gaius trying to treat them. He's so old he can't remember how to cure a fever.

   I walked up to Gaius and said, "I can handle them."
   Gaius shook his head. "I can, too."
   I sighed. "Gaius, you can't remember anything. I'll handle it. Besides, I am the new court physician."
   "Are you saying I'm old?"
   "Maybe..."
   "I am not old," Gaius smirked.
   "You keep telling yourself that," I laughed.
   Gaius huffed. "I remember some things."
   I laughed again. "Alright then. How do you cure bad eyesight?"
Gaius thought for a second. "You give them a bottle of ingredients."
"What are the ingredients?" I asked.
"Why do you expect me to know? I'm not the court physician." I laughed, gave Gaius some bread, and sent him to my room.

When I finished giving the patients their medicine, I went to see what Gwen was doing. I found her sitting on her throne in the throne room talking to Joseph. I walked in quietly and ignored their conversation. They must have been discussing the goblin incident. When Joseph left the room I approached Gwen.

"So what are your plans today?" I asked.
"Nothing really," Gwen replied, "Have you noticed anything different about Joseph recently?" She asked.
"He's got more quiet."
"Yes, but he has also matured."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Well, he respects James and I. And does what we ask. I just realized this today. I must have changed him, because only yesterday he was going on his adventures. Not to mention the false alarm."
"Maybe the incident with the goblin yesterday. Or he's trying to impress someone."
"Like a girl?"
"I was thinking more of King Alined's son, William, his wife, the lady Vivian, and their daughter Alice that's visiting. Besides, he's too young to like someone."
"I liked men when I was young."
"Yes, and you told me you didn't like the rough and tough guys. You said you liked guys like me yet you marry Arthur and James."
"That was a long time ago," Gwen laughed.
"You did specifically say you liked guys like me, just not me."
"I like you Merlin, as a friend, not a spouse."
"Thanks?"
Gwen laughed again. "I'll see you at the dinner tonight for our guests," she said.
"Yeah, see ya."

I decided to go out for the day and visit Kilgarrah. He's getting old and can't fly anymore. I figured he'd like a visit from me. So I traveled on horse and found him lying in the sun. I jumped off the horse and walked up to him. He lifted his head. I could see he was happy to have company.

"It's always a pleasure to see you, Merlin," he said in a raspy voice. "Have you come here for any particular reason?"
"Can't I just see an old friend?" He nodded his head. "You know how I ask you for help all the time?"
"Yes."
"I was wondering if you needed any help. Maybe you would like me to just talk with you. Maybe you could tell me about your past?"
"My past is too painful to talk about. But there is one thing."
"Ok go for it."
"I need you to find a boy."
"Oh, yeah. That'll be easy. There's only one boy in the five kingdoms," I said sarcastically.
"This isn't a joke, Merlin. You must be cautious."
   "I will, but how will I find him?"
   "I know he was born with a rare sickness that causes him to freeze to death in certain temperatures. That's all I know."
   "But how could you not know more?Your the great dragon."
"My powers are limited, Merlin. I don't know everything."
"I understand."
"So I know the boy has a rare sickness. Does that mean he lives near a place that is cold?"
   "Not necessarily."
   "Do you know where?"
   "I have a thought."
   "Can you tell me?"
   "Just don't look beyond where you've been."
   "I've been to many places."
   "You'll find him."
   I sighed, "Ok."
   I started to get into my horse. Then I said, "Why do you need this boy?" I asked.
   "You'll see when you bring him to me."
   "I have another question."
   "What are you dying to ask me?"
   "I was just wondering if you needed me to find him at an in-particular   time."
   "Take as long as you need, but keep your eyes open."
   "I will."
   "Thank you, Merlin. I will not forget this."

I headed back to Camelot.
