Talk About Bad Luck

Chin's POV

We hear the gunshots and then the screaming. Kono sprints out the door and I'm close behind her.

We run outside and see Catherine and Steve hugging 50 feet in front of a dead man with 3 bullets in his chest. And I have no idea who he is, or what he's done.

But it's bad.

Steve's POV

I was walking outside to ask Cath a quick question when I felt something weird. Something twisted inside me. Something wasn't right. I started running towards the door and had just stepped outside when I heard her gasp.

And then I heard the shots. I grabbed my gun and was prepared to shoot whoever was there but it was just her. I walked up to her slowly. "Catherine? Catherine?  Cath? You ok?" He hands are violently shaking with her gun still pointed at the dead body.

"It's ok." I say, slowly pointing the gun down and taking it from her. I see the tears in her eyes and a sob escapes her mouth.

I quickly pull her into a hug. "It's ok. It's ok, Cath. You got him. You got him." I coo. I have no idea who he is, I haven't seen his face yet, but something about him was definitely familiar.

Chin, Kono, and Danny all run out. "What the hell happened?" Danny yells when he sees the body. Catherine just shakes her head and pulls away from me, walking the other direction, off towards the side. I start to follow her but Kono pulls me back. "Let me go. I get it. I understand." She says, and based on the compassion in her eyes I can tell she can take it.

She walks towards Catherine and touches her arm. Catherine turns sharply, prepared to tell me that she's fine and that she wasn't really crying and that she doesn't remember what happened, but when she sees it's Kono she melts into her arms, still shaking slightly. Kono grasps her tightly in some sort of better-than-friendship bond that I will never understand.

I turn my back to them. It kills me that Catherine feels the need to be tough around everyone, and especially me. "So, who the hell is this guy?" I ask them. Chin laughs and Danny smiles slightly.

We walk towards the guy and I suddenly understand why Catherine was so upset. This is her ex from like four years ago. They were like best friends, and high school sweet hearts. Her dad awkwardly told me about it when I met him. They broke up when she joined the Navy.

So why did she shoot him?

I feel a tap on my shoulder and turn to see her standing in front of me, all signs of tears or sadness gone, of course.

"He was the one who tortured me." She states, her voice not even shaking. "He was wearing a mask but I recognized his voice. Plus, he kissed me, so I assumed I knew him somehow. I didn't realize it was him until he just came up to me in ther parking lot. I was all prepared to tell him I still didn't wanna go out with him until he said "hi." When he saw me register the voice he grabbed his gun. I got mine first and shot him."

Then she surprises me by saying, "Steve, can I talk to you inside for a minute." I feel my heart race. Is she gonna break up with me? Or say we need time apart? Or what? But I don't expect her to say what she says.

I follow her inside and she turns to face me once we're in headquarters. "I'm not ready to go back to work." She states flatly. I can tell she expects me to laugh or make fun of her or say I told you so, but I just solemnly nod.

"I'm not ready to be alone. I got scared out there. I'm not saying I can't protect myself, I'm saying I might need help with protection against the people that are close to me. I can't go back to work because I don't know who I can trust. I just.....I need you to be be with me right now."
