Phil

Phil looked around, confused. Where was Dan? He took in his surroundings. He was still in the future, he realised, as he noticed the infinite-seeming desert. He glanced down at his watch, a space-age time travelling portable tardis. He pressed a few buttons, aiming to go back to to the past, hoping Dan would be there, too. But nothing happened. He stayed put, the desert and scorching sun still smothering the world like a blanket of heat.

"DANNNN?"

Phil screamed at the top of his lungs, hoping for a reply.

"DANNNNNNN?"

Phil lay down, sweaty and worried, sinking into the muddy sand. I should just go home, thought Phil. So he stood up, brushing sand off his clothes. He would find Dan, but first he needed sleep. And check his Neko Atsume. (sorry couldn't resist that game is my life and yes of course they have it in the future)

Travelling North, obeying his compass, even though the new "world leaders" had banned all navigation devices, in the hope that the rest of humanity would get lost in the endless desert and die, leaving the "leaders" the only people left on Earth, the true supreme beings; the only ones left. But it was easy to fool them when there were only three against a world of millions of people.

Eventually Phil reached his half-destroyed mansion. Broken windows scattered the floor with glass and tattered shreds of curtain. Doors hung off their hinges, creaking in the violent wind. It had been like this since the attacks. Broken and far from repair.

Phil cautiously stepped into the house. Who knows who could break in when you have no doors? He fumbled in his pocket, before pulling out a rusted key and unlocking a small safe, containing his phone, some useless money and photos of his family. Where they were now he had no idea. When he would see them again - maybe never. Before the attacks, Phil had been extremely close to his mum. Now everything was different.

The room filled with the happy jingle of the Neko Atsume app. Phil smiled, only just a little smirk, but it was still a smile. Meeting Dan had filled him with hope, hope that together they may have a chance to save humanity.

Phil whilsted, out of tune, and sat down, imagining a world where he could still have a pet cat, maybe even a pet lion. He looked out of the window into the beyond, and almost jumped up out of his chair.

A figure stumbled across the sand-swept horizon, becoming larger and clearer as it ran towards Phil.

"DANNNN! DAN! IT'S YOU, DAN!"

Phil ran outside, towards the figure. It was not Dan.
