A young woman, pale and freckled from face to feet sat near the window while she attempted to hand sew a dress. It was tedious work, something she did not particularly like. A strand of her blonde hair fell out of her bun. She sighed, pushing the stray behind her ear before continuing. Frustrated, she pricked her finger. She looked at a dot of blood appeared on her skin. She brought it to her lips to get rid of the blood as to makes sure it didn't smear.
An older woman came in, looking similar to the blonde woman.
"Alvina, did you not hear me? I said come and greet the guests." The older woman stated, slightly annoyed. Alvina sighed and got up, setting her dress down.
"Yes mother." Her silver blue eyes were soft and gentle as she entered in the living space. There, two men sat, one somewhat older and skinny with brown eyes and hair. The other man had more of a medium build, pulled back blonde hair and green eyes. Alvina immediately knew what was happening.
The blonde man approached her, holding out his hand to greet her. "Your as lovely as your mother and father described you. My name is Jacob." Alvina smiled politely.
"And it's a pleasure to meet you, Jacob. I am Alvina." Alvina took his hand and shook it. Jacob smiled back before the man next to him spoke.
"I am Jacob's father, Frederick. A pleasure to meet you in person my dear girl." Alvina smiled at the older man and nodded her head in agreement. All four of them knew what was happening. Alvina was a young woman, her age being thirteen and that was a perfect time to marry. Though it was unusual that Alvina's possible suitor was so young. They talked over biscuits and tea while waiting for the father to return from his work. The mother served her guests well and made sure to add in particular details to win over the approval of Frederick.
The father returned home and greeted his guests. Everyone was friendly but Alvina wasn't too fond of the arrangement in front of her. Being forced to marry someone you don't really love doesn't sound like anything good could come from it. After the guests were gone, she was pushed back into her room while her parents discussed. She looked out her window, bored. The moon was in full affect, it's light blue light was beautiful against the background of stars.
She lived near a forest, thick and green with moss growing on downed trees. Wild life in that forest. Bears, birds, wolves, all sorts. But she never seem to see them during the day.
'Perhaps the animals are too scared to face us,' she thought to herself. As she was lost in thought, she heard the howl of a wolf. She was somewhat startled but recovered quickly.
'The wolves wouldn't come near this place.' Alvina was certain of her thought. But it was quickly shattered when a black wolf appeared from the forest, sniffing around. Its eyes were a beautiful gold color as it looked up at the stunned girl. Alvina didn't know what to do other than stop breathing. The wolf's eyes were calling to her, like echoes in her head. Hesitantly, the girl looks around before pulling up her skirt and slipping into the outside. As she landed on the grass, she could feel the coolness with her bare feet. The wolf began its walk back into the forest and Alvina followed.
She didn't know what was driving her to follow this savage creature but she did not question it. Alvina climbed over trees, branches snapping beneath her feet. The wolf's steps were softer, like they weren't touching ground. The only sound that made it so was that twigs would crack under the pressure of its feet.
Eventually, they reached a open area in the woods where the moon shown far more brighter than before. The black wolf stopped in the middle and turned itself to face the young freckled woman. Silence filled the air, the only sounds being the wind singing through the leaves and her dress dancing along. The wolf sat itself down in the cool grass and howled.
Alvina did not know what to make of this. She stood quietly, her hands rubbing her arms to generate heat. Her new companion walked over to her and grabbed her dress between its teeth, beginning to pull her to the middle. Alvina gasped in response and tried to pull away but the hound's grip was tighter. She was pulled to the middle and landed on her hands. Satisifed with itself, the wolf sat down and looked up at the moon.
"Did you just want me to look at the moon?" Alvina asked, not expecting a response. The wolf looked at her for a moment before returning its gaze to the glow of the moon.
'Have you ever took time to wonder what other creatures may be looking at the moon just as you are?' Alvina heard an unfamiliar voice, soft and gentle, feminine. She looked around frantically, searching for the source of the mysterious voice.
"Where did that voice come from?" she whispered to herself. The wolf nudged her and she glanced at them.
'There is no one else but us, human.' This time, she stood stunned at the creature, unable to form the proper words.
'Unless you count the sleeping birds and the nocturnal animals.' Alvina jumped up and began to walk away.
"Wolves can't talk. Animals cannot talk." She said, quite matter of fact. The wolf sighed through its nose.
'You know nothing of the world and its wonders. Us animals talk all the time, just not in your tongue. So how could you say that statement with such confidence?' Their words were questioning and quite confident, far more than her own. The voice was rather smug too.
"I... I... I don't know. I've just never heard a animal talk before..." Alvina replied, still quite uneasy about the whole situation.
'You are different than others of your kind. They would not blindly follow a wolf in the night and then not sprint out when they heard the wolf speaking. You are an interesting one, I will say.' The wolf paused for a moment. 'But you must return home now before the others within that wooden shelter come searching.' Alvina hummed in agreement and followed the wolf back to her home. She stopped and looked at the open window, the curtains swaying with the wind.
"Hey, Wolf-" but as she turned, the beast was already gone. She sighed and climbed back into the room where she switched into her nightgown and slipped into her bed.
