Trigger Warning: Some domestic violence used in this chapter.

It had been a few weeks since Maaike had entered into Alvina and Jakob's life and needless to say, she made everyone's day a little more amusing with her odd questions and even odder rituals she had. She would eat like a wild animal at times and loved staring at people, like she was inspecting them. No one knew where she came from but no one bothered to ask because she would never give the answer.
Maaike became the maid for Jakob's father, Federick. She was a disobedient one at times but quickly learned to listen very carefully to directions. Especially since she did not appreciate getting yelled at.
Maaike accompanied Jakob whenever he asked and carried much of his things. Alvina tried to help her as much as she could. Around Alvina, Maaike was a totally different person, always wanting to show her things and just have her attention in general.
"What do you want to show me now, Maaike?" Alvina asked, kneeling down next to a sitting Maaike.
"Did you know that you could make a fire with two sticks and some dry grass?" She said, showing her two damp sticks.
"I did know that. But certainly not with those sticks! They're too damp to make anything, much else a fire!" she chuckled. Maaike smiled.
'It seems like she is more a curious child than a fully grown woman.' Alvina thought.
"Now come on. I'm sure Jakob might need us for something." Alvina stated, gently grabbing her arm and pulling him up.
Alvina was only a couple months off from marrying Jakob since their parents had arranged it. Federick was paying for most of the wedding since he had far more money than Alvina's family. And Alvina, told by her mother, was to start acting like a proper wife. Which meant no complaining and always taking care of the husband. She didn't want to but had to anyhow.
As they entered into the house, they heard yelling. Quietly, the girls edged their way to the source of the sound, located in the small kitchen.
"What did I tell you!?" Alvina's father yelled at his wife. She was holding her tongue. The yelling only got worse from there but the girls simply stood out of eye sight. Alvina turned her gaze to the ground while Maaike balled her fists. She saw the movements of the man's arm going up and the wife flinching in anticipation. She immediately bolted, grabbing his arm behind his back.
"You should never hurt someone you love. Or anyone for that matter unless your very life depends on it." Maaike growled through her teeth. Alvina and her mother watched this woman, suddenly turn so serious and even more, stopping a hand that was about to bruise flesh.
"How do you like your doing, ya stupid girl!?" the man yelled back, attempting to get her grip from his arm. She tightened it, her nails sneaking into his flesh.
"Let go!" he said, pulling even harder on her hand. In desperation, he tried to hit her but she caught the hand just in time. She pushed the other hand back but he began to skrim in his place.
"Do you understand?" he nodded and she let go, just like that. The man's arm had small cuts from when the nails had inserted themselves but nothing too serious. The wife rushed to her husband's aid but he waved her off, still staring at Maaike's green eyes. They were filled with rage, and they watched every movement he made. She looked ready to kill. But her bland face removed as she stated, "I should find Jakob, he should need me soon." And she simply left, without another word or glance.
Alvina didn't know what to make of the behavior she just witnessed. She never saw a woman hurt another man like that. Or even ever. Her eyes whizzed around the room, trying to decide if everything that just happened, happened. She had never seen that side of her friend before in her life and it suddenly coming out was puzzling to her.
Her father rushed past her and her mother, leaving the scene entirely.
