Chapter 3

Danielle was sitting in a chair next to Ben's bed. She kept thinking about Ben's accident. She kept thinking that all of it was her fault. That if she hadn't blamed him for breaking her marriage, he would have never left mad and gotten into an accident. What if he never wakes up from this coma? That would be the end of her. Tears were coming to her eyes just thinking about it.

"No... Ben, please wake up" she whispered to herself. She put her face in her hands and cried until she had no more tears to dry.

"Are you his wife?" a voice came behind her. Danielle turned her head around to see that a doctor had just walked into the room.

"Um, no. I'm just his..." she looked back at Ben for a moment before continuing her sentence.

"Friend. I'm just his friend." she said. The doctor nodded and went by the bed to check on Ben.

"Will he be ok?" Danielle asked trying to sound genuine. The doctor sighed.

"We don't know. He's having a hard time breathing on his own and his head was hit really hard. He's slowly healing, so at this point, I think it's all up to him." the doctor said. Danielle nodded her head and looked down.

"Well, I'll leave you." he said before heading out the door.

After that night, every single day, Danielle would go visit Ben to the hospital and talk to him even if she thought he probably didn't hear. She didn't care about that though. All she cared about was being by his side. It had been almost two months since Ben's been in a coma. He was heeling well, but still needed a little help to breathe.

One day, Danielle went to the hospital to pay him a visit as she did everyday. She sat down in a chair next to his bed and looked at him before she started speaking. He was doing a lot better. He didn't have to wear a cast on his leg anymore and his broken arm was almost healed.

"I can't believe it's already been two months without you. These have been the worst two months of my life. You know, you were right. Tim was cheating on me. We're currently filling for divorce." Tears started to form in her eyes. One slowly rolled down her cheek. She sniffled as she wiped it away.

"Ben, I can't do this without you. I've never been through this without you before. Every time I would break up with someone, you were the one who would hold me and say I deserved better. I really need that right now. I really need you." She finished as she cried in her hands. She was crying. Again. She would cry everyday now. She felt so empty now. Like everything she had was just ripped away all at once. That night, she stayed at the hospital with him. She didn't want to leave his side.

A few weeks later, Danielle was watching TV on her couch when the phone suddenly started to ring.

"Hello?" She questioned answering the phone.

"Hi, Danielle. I'm calling because I want to tell you... Ben's awake." The voice said turning out to be Ben's mom.

Danielle's eyes immediately widened. Was she hearing this right? After 3 months of being in a coma, was Ben really finally awake? She couldn't believe it.

"Danielle?" Ben's mom questioned to make sure she was still there.

"He's... awake?" Danielle asked to make sure she was hearing her right.

"Yes!" Ben's mom replied. Danielle still let it process in her mind.

"I'm on my way." Danielle said before hanging up. She threw whatever piece of clothing she could find to go see Ben.  She then rushed to her car and hurriedly made her way to the hospital.

Once she got there, she quickly made her way to Ben's room. The door of his room was opened. She peeked in the room to see if he was really awake. He was. He was there, awake, breathing, with all of his injuries healed. She walked in the room and looked at him for a moment. She then ran to him and squeezed him in a hug.

"Oh my gosh, Ben you're awake!" She said as she felt tears of joy coming to her eyes. She held him with such a force that he felt himself having difficulty to breath.

"Um... Hi." Ben said. Danielle slowly pulled away from him and looked in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Ben asked confused.

That is the moment when her world completely crumbled.
