2064. It's a leap year. The past four years have been far from enjoyable for me. My current name is Cloud. What mother would call their child "Cloud"? It's something you may call a soft teddy bear, not your daughter. I'm a 46 year old mother of two. Both if my children, Linda and Charlie, are ignorant brats. They've obviously never been a single mother in the past. We live in a small apartment with a mouse infestation.
"Well I guess this is it," I state, "our last meal in this family."
"Thank god!" Charlie says rudely.
Well, at least we're all on the same page. It's nice to know I'm not the only family member who hates everyone at this table. Is it bad to hate your own daughter, even if you've only known them for four years and you never actually gave birth to them?
I lay down in my bed. It's 7:59. at exactly 8 every human being will be shut down in preparation for the 'spirit rotation'. Each person will have their soul automatically sucked out if them and placed in a different body. Depending on how you lived your life ( if you were friendly or cruel to others or broke the laws) you would be placed in a rewarding body.
"Cant be more then thirty seconds until I'm out of this hell hole." I think.
I've been a good person for the past few years. A few lives ago I stupidly told stories about previous lifetimes. I should have expected to get caught and stuck as a middle aged woman. I've made an effort to be well behaved since then. I mean, I haven't yet murdered one of the children I got stuck with. But it's not too late for that.
The ideal age to be given is around 16 years old - before serious schooling starts but after puberty. I don't care what age I'm given, to be honest I'll be happy as long as I'm no longer Cloud Baker. It's the first time I've been older than 35. I pity the parents an teachers I've had now. It's put everything in a new light.
I can hear the countdown now.
"10, 9, 8.."
Goodbye smelly old apartment, goodbye minimum wage.
"7, 6, 5, 4.."
Goodbye disrespectful children, goodbye funny looking rash under my arm.
"3, 2.."
Goodbye Cloud Baker.
"1."
