Chapter Three

I stepped out of the cab in front of a trendy restaurant located a few blocks away from my final destination. I could smell the food inside of the building, and made a mental note to come back to this place later. I started walking in one direction. Taking a long, winding route and watching for witnesses, my mind began to wander. What would happen if I got caught? I would break out. What if I can't escape? What would Gavin do? You would rot in jail, and Gavin would stick to the plan. Shutting out that uncomfortable thought, I focused on passerby's faces. A woman and her child, a businessman in a suit, obviously having somewhere to be, and many other people I don't bother to remember.

I finally reached my destination, A large, off white, old looking building. I read the sign above the tall double doors. BANK. Formulating a plan inside of my head, I covered my normal clothes with sludge and created a small stereotypical superhero mask over my eyes. Opening the doors to the bank, I destroyed all video cameras in the room and blocked out the doors and windows.

"Get on the ground!" I yelled, automatically causing a frenzy. I used my sludge to bind and gag all of the civilians, causing everyone who wasn't already on the ground to fall over with a thud. I crept to the back of the large room and down a long hallway, keeping an eye out for stray bank employees. Finally, I reached the vault and broke the lock with an object attached to my belt.

I began to stash money into bags made of sludge. After I finished,  I began to feel drained. I walked out of the vault and back down the hallway, hoping to ask one of the terrified clerks about a back exit. Right after I stepped in front of the counter where the clerk is, I heard the wail of sirens.

I cursed under my breath. forget the silent exit, I thought. I'm going out with a bang.

"Release the hostages and surrender the money!" A voice outside demands. "In your dreams." I mutter. Looking down at the assorted objects hooked onto my belt of new tech, I spot  few things that look like grenades. I make a mental note to thank Gavin later.

"You have five seconds to comply!" The voice outside continues. "Five!" I stash the bags on money in a sheltered corner, by a potted plant. "Three!" I take a moment to asses my surroundings, taking note of anything that I could use to my advantage.

"one!" I hear a loud crashing sound as the police break through the doors and the layer of sludge I had placed there. I grab a grenade-like object and throw it.

It was a smoke bomb. And it wasn't very effective.

It hit the ground in a small green puff of smoke, then quickly dispersed. I really should have had Gavin tell me what this stuff does. Right when I was reaching for another grenade-shaped object, the first two or three police officers into the building toppled over backwards, creating a domino-like effect. The domino chain took out about a dozen cops that were rushing into the building. This confusion allowed me to grab a familiar objects hanging on my belt and lob it at the police officer bowling pins. When the grenade went off, it created a large arc of electricity, blocking the door and knocking out the remaining cops.

Quickly, I ran over to a bank clerk and demanded that he point me toward a back door.

"Mrrffff, mrrrrffff." The clerk grumbles, reminding me about the gag in his mouth. I undo the sludge gag, and he answers my question hurriedly.

I memorized his directions, re-doing his gag and glancing  down the long marble hallway he pointed me towards. I wandered down the long hallway, constantly glancing behind me for police. Left, left, right, and left again. Finally, I came to a closed door. I burst through the door and suddenly, I am standing in front of about a dozen police officers.

Yelping in surprise, I slammed the door shut and started running back down the long twisting hallway. When I get back to the entrance, officers were just starting to storm the building again after my electric grenade. Forced to make a quick decision, I released my hold on the hostages and immediately regained some lost energy. With my new energy, I knocked a hole in the perfect marble ceiling. Creating a sludge disk below my feet, I flew out of the building using my new escape route, levitating my bags of money behind me, and leaving dozens of confused police officers below my feet. Realizing that the police were most likely going to send some superhero after me, I decided to go into hiding. I sent the money bags straight up until they were just barely noticeable specks in between clouds, then zoomed a few blocks away from the bank. Before landing in front of the trendy restaurant I was at earlier, I made sure to remove the smooth sludge coating from around my clothes. After my feet touched the ground, I pulled out my phone and texted Gavin, updating him on how the heist went and explaining what I did with the money.

I stepped into the building and calmly asked for a table for one, waiting patiently to be seated. After sitting down and skimming over the menu, I felt my phone buzz and discreetly checked my message from Gavin.

"That's great, Liz. Nice job. When do you think that you'll be getting back here?"

I quickly texted back and told him that I stopped for lunch. The second I shoved my phone into my pocket, felt a tap on my shoulder a heard a deep voice.

"Excuse me ma'am, I have some questions to ask you."
