Chapter 15
Rather than texting Daniel, I decided to call him to apologise again for leaving him with Adrian and Chuck while I went after Payton. Afterwards, during the rest of my classes, I had a horrible feeling of guilt in the pit of my stomach which distracted me from working productively. Hopefully, calling Daniel would help. I originally planned on going over to his house but decided against it just in case he was mad at me. I didn’t want him to throw a vase at me or something like that.
Daniel picked up on the second ring but didn’t say anything which was not a good sign. There was only one logical reason for this. He probably hated me for leaving him. “Look, Daniel, I’m really sorry about–”
“Oh thank God, hi Kayla!” Daniel interrupted me, sounding overly cheerful.
“Daniel? I’ve never heard someone so happy to talk to me,” I said, feeling relieved to hear his voice and to find out that he wasn’t upset at me.
“I’m so glad that you called!”
“You seem a bit enthusiastic,” I stated.
“Yeah I’m sorry about that. One of my dad’s colleagues is over and he bought his daughter along too, and she won’t leave me alone. It’s freaking me out,” he whispered frantically.
“Wait, why are you whispering?” I asked, holding back a laugh.
“Well, umm, it’s because I’m hiding in our coat closet so I have to stay quiet.”
“Oh my God, that’s hilarious.” I could even visualise him, blushing furiously and hiding in a corner.
“No it’s not!” he exclaimed and was no longer whispering. “Anyway, I lied to them and said that I had to go to the toilet, and that was half an hour ago.”
“Don’t you think you’re overreacting by hiding in the closet?” I questioned.
“Trust me, I’m not,” he said. “It’s like she’s obsessed with me. I had to get out of there.”
“You’re exaggerating,” I said with a smile. I was glad that Daniel didn’t think I was a bad friend for ditching him. “So, what happened after I left today?”
“Umm, you didn’t really miss out on much. We talked mostly about girls.”
Girls? Of course Adrian would choose that topic. “Anyone in particular?” I asked curiously.
Daniel laughed. “Nice try. I promised I wouldn’t say anything. Apparently it’s part of ‘The Bro Code’.”
“Fine whatever, I’ll just ask Adrian.”
“I don’t think he’ll tell you either. He was dead serious about the whole ‘bros before hoes’ thing. He even made me swear an oath and sign a form–the whole shebang. ”
Great, now I’ll never know what they talked about. “Yeah, even though Adrian jokes around a lot of the time you wouldn’t want to mess with him when he’s being serious.”
“Trust me, I don’t plan on breaking one of his rules any time soon.”
“A few years ago,” I began, “I asked–actually, I practically begged–Adrian if I could be a part of his brotherhood group that he created called ‘Bro-drians’.”
“No way, you must be joking and what kind of name is ‘Bro-drians’?”
“I’m not joking and it’s supposed to be brothers and Adrian combined. He’s not very creative. Can you guess what happened after that?”
