"No." I said, crossing my arms.

"C'mon, Marinette! It'll be fun! Besides, tons of people are doing it." Alya said, waving the flyer.

"Alya, I'm invested in someone else." I shook my head.

"Marinette, now don't take this the wrong way, but I think you know that's going no where." Alya shrugged.

"Duh?" I said.

"Marinette...." Alya whined.

"Alya, I don't want to. It's frightening." I said, lifting my chin firmly up.

Alya sighed. "That's why you do it. It's exciting and challenging!" She said.

"Doesn't mean you should do it!" I exclaimed.

"But Marinette, I don't want to do it myself. I already signed up." Alya pouted, crossing her arms.

"Alya...." I trailed off.

I didn't want her to it alone. I already knew I'd have to do it anyways. "Just... consider it?" Alya asked, handing me the paper.

"Okay, Al. But you owe me big." I said.

Alya jumped happily, turning to find a new victim. I sighed and walked off, heading home. I looked down at the paper. 31 Day Challenge! It yelled. I scanned the details. I was free that night. Heck, I was free every night.

The 31 day challenge, the newest fad sweeping Europe. You spend thirty-one days with a stranger, getting to know them. You never get to see their face, though. You wear a mask until the reveal day, day thirty-one. It's how you're supposed to meet your boyfriend or girlfriend, but so few couples last past day thirty-one.

Requirements:

Over age 15

Parental Consent

Mask that covers most of face (excluding mouth)

Application filled in and sent before the ball of the 30th

All I needed was the application and mask. My parents had asked me about the 31 Day Challenge, and I'd explained you just got to meet someone and talk until the last day. They said I could join, as long as I told them I was going. "Bonjour, Maman! I'm home!" I called, stepping into the door of our home.

"Hello, dear. How are you?" Sabine asked, pulling a tray of muffins from the oven.

"Well. Mom, Alya insists I join the 31 Day Challenge." I said.

"Go ahead, sweetheart. I'll tell your father later." Sabine said, turning around and putting a new tray into the oven.

I was so glad my parents were so behind on current hip events. I skipped up my stairs, excitement replacing the dread. What if I found the one? What if the person I was paired with fell in love with me? What if I didn't return their feelings? I'd have to wait and see.

I typed in the website address, fingers trembling excitedly. Name, postal code, phone number, age, email. The typical stuff. Then it gave me a number, directed me to another webpage, and told me to type in the number. My fingers flew over the keyboard and a new poll showed up. Gender? Female. Sexual Orientation? Hetero. The last question stumped me. Code Name (This is the name you will go by during the 31 Day Challenge.)? I had to think. Mari? Too close to my name. Then, a tiny Ladybug landed on my computer screen, and I typed the name in. Ladybug. Name available! It celebrated. I hit the enter key, waiting for my profile to generate.

I filled in the sections that were empty, and a little 2 appeared in my inbox. I clicked it, a message appearing.

Welcome, 31 Day Challengers!

We at the 31 Day Challenge Committee are proud to announce that we have more funding! This means we can get a cell phone to each and every participant!

Cellphones will be used strictly with your challenge partner. We'll give you the SIM card and Memory card to keep when the challenge ends, but we ask that this phone is returned on the 31st party.

The new funding also means a bigger venue! Each and every participant is paired with another person! No more fighting for spots! Our kick-off ball will be held in a hall instead of a park! The Challenge End party will also be held in a similar ballroom!

See you in five days, The 31 Day Challenge Committee!

I closed the message, looking at the other one.

Welcome to The 31 Day Challenge, Ladybug!

The 31 Day Challenge is a challenge lasting the duration of a month. Each day, you meet with your assigned challenge partner and each receive a text from our coordinators. That's the activity for the day! You must complete it or you're out of the challenge. Each day, you can choose the Innocent challenge or the Sin challenge. Once you choose, you have to do it. It's an honor system, and we know what challenge you've decided. You'll meet your partner on November 30th. You and your partner part ways December 31st, after attending the Challenge End Party.

You're currently signed up for December! You can sign up for January starting after December 1st.

The rest of the letter was disclaimers and reminders. A ball of dread laced itself together in my stomach. What if I didn't like it? What if the challenge was disgusting or inappropriate?

I shivered at the thought. Instead of worrying too much, I got to work on my dress and mask. My mask was a simple thing, covering only my eyes. Since my blue hair was clearly too recognizable, I would dye it temporarily black and leave it down.

My dress, however, was not going to be simple. I started sketching right away.
