I woke up to the sound of a knock at my door. "Adrien, come for breakfast." Natalie called, her heels clicking away on the floor.
I was out of bed and dressed as fast as I could manage. Which was pretty fast, considering all the quick changes I went through at photo shoots. I ran a brush over my teeth and a different one through my hair, trying to come off as seemingly put-together. I burst from my door, barely remembering to shut the door and keep Plagg in. I ran down the stairs, skidding to a stop in front of the dining room doors. Pushing my hair back into place, I stepped politely to my seat. When my breakfast was set in front of me, I finally allowed myself to think of Ladybug. She hadn't responded to my last text, but the read receipt was there. I had mentally high-fived myself for that at one in the morning.
Was it possible for someone who'd I known for two days to steal my heart? Someone who I'd spoken with no longer than hours, someone who'd I'd been with for twelve. But to me, it seemed as though those were stupid little facts. There was something about Ladybug, something about us. We just... clicked. "Let's go, Adrien." Natalie said, looking up from her tablet.
"Oh... okay." I said, shoveling what was left of my breakfast into my mouth.
"Were you up late?" Natalie asked, suddenly grabbing my chin and turning my face from side to side.
"I had homework." I lied easily.
I almost felt guilty.
"That is no excuse. You are representing the Agreste company every time you step foot out of this mansion." Natalie's grip loosened at the sound of my father's voice.
"Sorry, father." I said, shuffling to face him.
"You had homework." He muttered, scrutinizing my face.
It took all of my willpower not to slap father's face. Not, you look tired, are you alright? Not, it's important to get enough sleep. No. My father scolded me for being a teenager because I have a company to represent. "Is that all I am? Just an asset meant to represent your company?!" I asked, my voice slowly rising.
"Adrien-" I didn't let father start.
"In case you'd forgotten, I'm also a person! I'm not just your little Ken doll that you get to pose and present as a perfect little boy! I'm a grown man! And I'd appreciate if the only three people around here started treating me like it!" I yelled, breathing heavily from my outburst.
Father's face was twisted angrily, and it finally seemed as though I had over-stepped my bounds. I straightened up, my frustrated expression melting off my face to sadness. Or maybe disgusted, dejected. Perhaps it was a mixture of all three. "Natalie." Father said, giving her a nod.
Natalie in turn nodded to Gorilla. "Wait- No- No! Stop! Don- Put me down!" I yelled, Gorilla restraining me.
He easily lifted me off the ground, carrying me under his arm. "Deal with me yourself! Why are you just standing there? Don't you care?" I called desperately.
We had almost left the dining room when I pulled one of my last cards. The only one I knew that I'd be able to handle using. The other one.... not as much. "I'm supposed to be your son! Not Natalie's, not this gorilla of a man's, your's!" I yelled in a last-ditch effort.
I could've stopped there. In fact, I probably should have stopped there. But I was a hormonal, angst-y, and currently-physically-restrained teenager. At this point, I could already feel tears pricking my eyes, and to say they made me feel worse would be an understatement. It made me feel unsubstantial, useless. "You're- you're supposed to- Dad!" The doors shut, and father's face only changed for his eyes to widen.
"Put me down! Put- Put me down, you idiot!" I yelled, kicking Gorilla in the stomach.
He finally dropped me. Unfortunately, he literally dumped me on the ground. "Adrien-" Natalie's hand brushed my shoulder.
In turn, I leaned down that way, whipping around. "Don't." I threatened.
Her hand was hovering in the air between us, mouth slightly agape. Glaring, I pushed past Gorilla, slamming the door of the house behind me. House. Home would never suit this building. It stopped working when my mother had disappeared. I wasn't sure if it'd fit under the same name when and if she ever did come back.
I walked past the silver sedan waiting for me, walking to school instead of taking the vehicle. When I arrived, I was just in time for Marinette to come barreling into the courtyard. She almost ran into me, but we both stepped to the side at the last second. "Adrien!" Marinette said, stooping to pick up a book she'd dropped.
"Good morning, Marinette." I said curtly.
"Hello." She said, straightening up.
It took approximately three seconds for a blush to burst across her facial features. She finally looked up to make eye contact with me when her eyebrows furrowed. "Are... Are you alright?" She asked, stepping forward.
"Fine." I said bitterly.
"No, not fine. You don't have to tell me whatever it is, just tell what I can do to help." Marinette insisted.
"I don't know. What's gonna help me now?" I sighed, stepping forwards.
"Let's go to class, okay?" I asked wearily, stopping next to Marinette.
I had taken one step before Marinette bumped into me, wrapping her arms around me in an embrace. I was too shocked to anything back at first, but relaxed and hugged back after a beat. She smelled like flour and sugar, probably the result of living in a bakery.
Marinette pulled back, patting my shoulder before taking off to her own class. Needless to say, I felt just a little bit better. And that little bit made all the difference.
