It was no denying that Amelia was talented. With the dangerous deadline , she managed to work efficiently and calmly. Aster was right , Amelia was good with this. Maybe after the event, I will hire her as company's permanent.
"How can I help you?" Aster said without looking up from her book.
"My usual lessons," I answered her with slight amusement.
This she looked up with a look of surprise on her face.
"Don't you have Amelia working for you?"
"So?" I was befuddled at her question.
"Why are you here now?"
I juggled with different answers like for my lessons, like I suddenly understood flowers and I wanted to know more but it was all a lie. Flowers were just flowers for me. So I decided to go with the truth.
"To see if you are okay and also to learn."
My words made her stare at me for a moment too long and then with a confused frown she arranged few pots on the shelf.
She climbed up a little higher on a wooden ladder to keep some pots on higher shelf.
"You are not trying to fall in my arms, right?" I teased her and I saw a ghost of smile flicker on her face.
"I am not trying to fall, period."
"Well, if you did I will catch you," I answered her lightly but there was a hint of truth in my words. I swear I had no idea where these thoughts were coming from.
"There are people to always laugh when you fall but not always to pick you up." She sounded distant and pained.
"But there will always be that one who is there to pick you up," I answered her pessimistic thoughts.
"You know, you sound like a romance writer Kyler?" She said my name and it made me smile. My heart warmed up like it was a big deal
"I am a big romantic at heart," I said with mock seriousness.
She gave me an amused looked and a very small but sad smile, "So was I."
Was, she said was. Should I ask her directly the reason for her pain or should I start nagging Amelia?
And why are you so interested Kyler, my conscience said but I didn't have an answer.
"What flower are we learning about today?"
She sighed and picked up a purple coloured. I tried to feel something, deep meaning behind it but nothing came. It made no sense how she knew so much about flowers and emotions connected to them and yet her eyes seemed to be blank as if she was hiding those emotions.
"Delphinium. It is a beautiful flower that symbolises fun, levity." She stopped her words and looked at the flower.
It happened suddenly and my heart constricted ten folds as a tear escaped her eyes. She had never cried openly and I had no idea how to react.
"It also symbolises ardent attachment." Her voice was thick with emotion.
I searched for right words to say for a while.
"Attachment can always be severed if the person is not worth that emotion."
"But then severing something leaves a scar. Some scars never heal." She looked at me, tears still glistening in her eyes.
"Some do and those which don't, someone is there to distract you from the pain." I said gently.
We stared at each other which felt like for an eternity and maybe she saw something in my eyes because a tinge of pain erased from her beautiful orbs.
Beautiful eyes, yes, she had beautiful eyes behind that pain. I never noticed before.
"I will buy some."
"For?" she asked with that small smile she had on her face today.
"For fun. There is nothing a little fun can't heal."
"Is that so?" she asked as if mocking me.
"Want to bet?" I asked her feeling excited for a moment.
"We are not kids Kyler."
"We are not also dead Aster, we can bet," I grinned at her and saw the confusion in her eyes.
"Fine, bet. There are things fun can't heal."The look on her face caused a slight ache in me.
I presented a single flower from the bunch to her and her eyes shot open in shock.
"For fun, Aster. Tomorrow, 2 'o' clock?" I asked and waited for her to accept the flower.
She looked at the flower , then at me and then again at the flower.
"Aster?" I prodded further.
"For fun, not for attachment?" She confirmed and I realised she was afraid of getting attached.
And again out of many answers, I decided to go for truth.
"For you, yes but I can't promise about myself for no attachment."
I gauged her reaction as soon as I said the words, scared of screwing up the whole deal.
She sighed as if she lost a battle in her head and looked at me with slight amazement.
"2 o' clock, tomorrow." She muttered a reply I so wanted to hear.
