“DANTE GET DOWN HERE!”

Dante from his room heard the raucous voice of Felix echo up the spiral staircase up into his bedroom. Dante sighed and got off the mattress that laid upon the floor;  covered by a few shirts and a old, shabby blanket that barely kept him warm on cold autumn nights.

“Stupid Felix…” Dante mumbled to himself as he dropped The Catcher in the Rye paperback to the floor after folding back a page to keep it’s place. “...I was at the best part!”

Dante had always been a bibliophile, and never was a few feet away from a book. Felix and Sam had never spoiled, or even cared to much for Dante ever since they found him as a child, so naturally, Dante went to books as an “escape” from his life. Even though it was the centennial for the number of times he had read The Catcher in the Rye, he still got a bit agitated when Felix had interrupted his adventure.

Dante walked down the stairs cautiously, not knowing what to expect from the boys not much older than him, who had a habit of using him as a human punching bag; but to his surprise, both men stood normally in the living room waiting for him to come down from the second story of the house.

“What?” Dante asked in a emotionless voice, still feeling sad he couldn’t be upstairs reading in his usual sedentary lifestyle.

Felix and Sam both had their atrous jackets on and their running sneakers on, along with beanies that covered their hair and forehead, making them look unrecognizable to anyone who hasn't known them for their entire life. Dante sighed and put on his matching jacket, sneakers, and beanie. He knew the routine and he dreaded it ever since he was young.

After getting dressed, the three boys left their mansion and locked the doors, setting off for the night.

After walking for ten minutes, the boys reached the ingress to the city. Dante was always so fascinated with view of the city. Bright lights, tall buildings, the buzzing of cars, it all was fascinating to him. He turned all his focus to the city, knowing he wouldn’t be able to view it for long since their “business” took place downtown.

Lawliet trembled as they crossed the barrier between the beautiful city and the dark, dangerous alleys. “Wh-what if this time w-we get ca-caught?” Lawliet said in a frightened voice. “Relax! this part of town is so littered with crime, no one will bat an eye!” Felix replied in a carefree tone.

The three men hid in an alley, camouflaged by their black jackets. Suddenly, a young girl quickly walked by, trying her best to reach home before the streetlights went off. Sam and Felix looked at one another, and with Felix’s approbation,Sam came up from behind and tried to snatch her purse.

Dante covered his eyes with his gloved hands. Dante was a philanthropist at heart, he donated his old clothes to shelters and tried his best to help others; but he never had the audacity to step in whenever Sam and Felix robbed the defenseless; so all he did was avoid witnessing it.

“L-LAY OFF!” the girl screamed to Sam before throwing a dauntless punch at the large man, knocking off his beanie disguise. Sam didn’t move an inch, and the girl stared at his now identifiable face before running down the street towards an oncoming cop car.

Felix sprung out of the alley and tackled her down, and with the help of Sam, hid her in the alley with them until the cop car had driven by.

“That was close!” Felix said out of breath. “yeah…” Sam joined in. “...s-she saw my face, and if she would’ve described it to the cops…” Sam looked down upset at this thought. He was well known around town for being the mascot at Tony’s Pizza. and many people knew his face. If the young lady would’ve described him to the cops, they could track where he lived.

“Well we don’t have to worry about her tattling to the cops…” Felix said evilly. “...cause’ we’re just going to keep her.”

The young lady’s eyes opened widely at what he said, and began to thrash about. Her efforts were futile though since Felix and Sam together had a strong advantage.

Dante adverted his eyes from her’s. He felt so guilty not to help, but Lawliet didn’t want to to rebel against Felix like he did once before. he mouthed to the girl, “I’m sorry.” and gently placed a hand over his left ribs recollecting an event from not too long ago while following Felix and Sam through the city to their home.

Once they arrived home, Felix locked the doors and stared at the lady in front of him with scorn.

“Look! now we have to keep you here because you couldn’t just let us do our business! As if ONE extra person wasn’t enough!”

With a great deal of stress and anger he kicked at the lady laying on the ground in front of him. Some people revel at the misfortune of others, and Felix was one of those people.

Before Felix could kick her again, Dante stood in front of her. Felix stopped abruptly, staring at Dante who was acting very perfidious toward him, since he usually stood by Felix during times like this.

“No!” Dante yelled at him, not even caring if Felix would beat him up later for it. “I can’t stand around and watch you hurt this lady! I always stick by you; i didn’t stop you when you took this man’s house, when you took those girl’s purses, or any other time! But this is going too far!” Dante felt tears form in his eyes, seeing the similarity between this and what had happened to him one before. He also felt a slight shimmer of pride rise inside him knowing he had just protected a life.

Felix rose a hand to slap him, but then set it down at his side. “Fine…” Felix said calmly with a faint smirk rising on his face. “...I’ll won’t hurt her, but as a retribution for acting out of place, she’ll stay in YOUR room and be YOUR responsibility.” Felix’s smirk had now spread across his face, knowing making Dante have a roommate and ruining his private time he enjoyed so very much would be worse than any pain.

“But I…” DANTE  was about to protest, but the lady looked at him with vulnerable look which made him instantly shut his mouth. “Th-that’s ok…”: Dante said in a wretched tone as he picked up the lady and brought her upstairs to his bedroom.

As soon as Dante set her down and closed the door, she broke down in a spontaneous fit of tears. Dante didn’t know how to act, nobody had ever cried to him before.

“ummmm….” Dante looked around the room, looking for something that might placate the emotionally wrecked girl sitting in front of him.

“A ha!” Dante rushed to his CD player and quickly put on the song, Don’t you Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia. Whenever he was upset, he played one of the CDs he had accumulated throughout the years. music and books were the closest thing Dante had to a caring human being whenever he was upset, so he assumed the same could go to calm down the girl.

“...and don’t cha’ worry don’t cha’ worry child, see heaven’s got a plan for you! Don’t you worry don’t you worry now…” Dante quietly sang the song; half to himself and half to the lady. The lady began to realize what was happening, and began to relax.

The song ended and the lady had one hundred percent calmed down. She looked at Dante in a trusting way and put out her hand.

“H-hi my name is Mari.”
