Chapter Six

I stared at the screen, my eyes flickering as I tried to focus on hearing some words exit Ariel's mouth on the security footage.

I knew she was talking to Dr. Bell, she had said so and I believed her. Besides, I knew that Ariel had some sort of trick to make it so that it seemed as if she said nothing while speaking with her doctors.

She was an evil one, more evil then I had ever seen.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

I sighed, tearing my eyes away from the screen to look out to the balcony.

I tilted my head to the side in confusion, as I saw that there was no one on the other side of the glass doors.

Odd. Then again, it’s probably someone at the real door.

I stood up, and walked swiftly towards the door, peering out of the peek hole. When I saw who it was, I began to smile, and opened the door quickly.

There stood Samantha Clark, formerly Kilmury as she is my ex-wife. She was carrying my three year old daughter, June.

"Daddy!" June squealed, reaching out towards me.

I chuckled, pulling her out of her mother's arms and into my own, holding her close to me as she hugged me tightly around the neck.

"I'm sorry, Sam. I forgot that you were dropping her off today." I apologized, and Sam smiled at me, shrugging her shoulders.

My ex-wife and I were still friends, the only reason that we split up is because she really needed space, and I was so busy all the time, it was hard on her and she felt neglected.

"That's alright, Jonathan. I brought June over for the weekend. I will be back to pick her up on Sunday night, okay?" Sam asked.

I nodded, though there was a nagging feeling in the back of my head.

This is definitely not the best place for June at the moment. But, if Ariel touches her, she will never get... whatever it was that she wants from me.

"Alright, thanks, Sam. I'll see you on Sunday, then."

Sam smiled. It wasn't exactly a secret; I still had feelings for her. If Ariel did anything to either Sam or June, I would make sure she got what she deserved.

"Alright. Goodbye, John." Sam said, reaching up to give me a gentle peck on the cheek before she turned away, walking down the hall and down the stairs.

I smiled and turned, carrying June into the apartment.

"I missed you!" June told me, and I chuckled again, swinging her around, causing her to squeal with laughter.

I stopped, and walked over to the television, turning off the screen which was still playing the tapes. The last thing I needed was for June to see those and become involved in this.

"So, what have you and mommy been up to, sweetie?" I asked, sitting down in my chair with June on my lap.

"We went to the circus!" June told me, leaning her head back against my chest and peering up at me with large green eyes, which were reflections of my own.

"Did you really? What did you do there?" I inquired, ruffling her chocolaty brown hair that was the same shade as mine.

June had the same curly brown hair as I did, and the same dark green eyes, but, other than that, she looked just like her mother.

"We saw the clowns and monkeys. Oh, and Effa… Effafants!" She squealed, trying to sound out a word that was hard for her to pronounce.

I chuckled, kissing her on the top of her head.

"You mean elephants?" I questioned.

June nodded, giggling.

"I gave one a peanut!" She told me, and I chuckled again.

June yawned, and I smiled down at her, before standing up with her in my arms, holding her close to me and setting her on my hip.

"I think it's somebody's bedtime." I told her, causing June to squirm in my arms.

"But, Daddy, I'm not tired!" June whined, though she yawned again right after she spoke.

I laughed, yet, June just pouted.

I brought her into her room, and helped her get changed into her pajamas. Then I scooped her up again, and tucked her into bed.

"Goodnight, sweetheart." I said, tucking her in snugly.

She smiled sweetly, and took my face in her small hands, before she leaned up to kiss me gently on the nose.

"Goodnight, daddy!"

I kissed her forehead, pulling the covers up before turning and walking to the door, turning out the lights.

I left the door open, as June didn't like complete darkness.

I walked back over to the living room, sighing as I sat down heavily in my chair, grabbing the remote and turning the television on again.

I watched Ariel not speaking to anyone for about an hour, until I felt my eyes getting heavy. I leaned back and rested my head on the back of the chair; the tapes could wait until morning.

"Daddy, you're on TV! Who's the girl on the screen that's talking to you?"

June's voice was what caused me to wake up instantly, looking at my daughter who was staring at the television, and at Ariel.

At Ariel… who was speaking? Oh no…

"June, sweetheart. You shouldn't be watching this. You need to go back to bed." I told her, and pulled June up into my arms.

"Alright, daddy." June agreed.

She rested her head on my shoulder as I carried her back into her room.

I was filled with nothing but dread. June heard Ariel speak, and I was sure that was what made you become involved in all of this, if you were allowed to hear Ariel speak.

"Now, stay in bed this time." I told June, who nodded, and instantly closed her eyes.

I kissed her forehead and left the room, going over to the television and putting away all of the tapes.

I was scared, now June was involved in all of this, I didn't want my daughter to get hurt.

I looked up at the one tape that was still playing on the television. I watched as now, Ariel spoke. This tape had been silent before, I knew it.

I watched this tape; Ariel had remained silent the whole time.

I sat down and watched as the tape continued to play. I watched it for the rest of the time, until the tape ended and the screen turned blue.

I stood up, and walked over to the television, just about to take it out, when I heard a scream that made my blood run cold.

June.
