Chapter Five

***

Maddie unmercifully shook Luke awake, taking no notice as he fell out of bed.

"Get out." Maddie's voice was cold and reserved as she held back the tears.

"What the hell, Maddie?" Luke stood up, rubbing his elbow. Maddie wasn't phased by the fact that he wore only boxers.

She picked up his clothes and tossed them at him, suddenly unable to keep from crying any longer.

"So you didn't think it was important to tell me, did you?"

"Tell you what?" Luke asked, sounding exasperated as he pulled his jeans on.

Maddie didn't care how unattractive she looked. She knew that she looked hideous when she cried. Her cheeks flushed to an angry shade of red and her nose crinkled up. But she didn't care.

"So you didn't think," Maddie paused to sniffle and gasp for air. "You didn't think I'd care that your...your slag of a mother is the reason that my father's dead?" Maddie suddenly felt sick. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop crying.

Luke looked stricken. He tried to move closer to her. "Maddie, I--"

Maddie whimpered. "Don't come near me," she shrieked tearfully. "Just leave!" Luke looked like he wanted to say something but Maddie beat him to it. "Get out," she blubbered.

"Maddie, listen to me!" Luke demanded.

"Just go!" Maddie cried. Luke complied. He quietly picked up his shirt and left. Maddie heard him driving away.

Maddie crawled into bed, where she lay weeping for hours, covered by her purple comforter. She didn't know what else she was supposed to do.

Because on October 31st at 11:07 PM, Luke Skyler Parkin took her virginity.

And unfortunately, she'd never get it back.

The Gregory twins lay stretched out on the grass in the backyard of the Gregory Estate. Penelope was texting and Carlo was trying to convince their lazy cat, Muffy, to chase a squirrel. Carlo's phone buzzed.

From: Hanna

November 1, 3:19 PM

hey! just wondering if we're still on for the movies tonight? can't wait!! xxx

Carlo resisted the growing urge to roll his eyes. Hanna had already badgered him into asking her out at the party the previous night, and this was the fourth time that day that she had texted to confirm.

To: Hanna

November 1, 3:20 PM

yep. I'll pick you up at seven.

Carlo briefly wondered if he was texting the right person. He only kept about forty contacts: His sister, his parents, Maddie, his coach, the guys from his various sports teams, and whichever girl he was dating the current week. He didn't want to get girls mixed up and cause some sort of riot among his exes.

"Did you talk to Maddie today?" Penelope asked her brother without looking up from her cell phone.

"No. Why?"

"She left in such a hurry yesterday," Penelope told him, a tinge of concern in her voice.

"She's okay," Carlo responded.

"We'll see about that," Penelope muttered, dialing Maddie's phone number. It rang for a while before it went to voicemail. Penelope hung up and tried again. This time it went straight to voicemail.
