Stop Worshiping Me!

Every siren, including the children, circle around me and bow down. I start to blush. "Please do not bow down to me. I am the same creature that most of you have watched grow up. I am the same one that all have you have always known." They all straighten up and start talking to me all at once. I open my mouth to start answering the many questions that they are spitting at me. Before I could even speak, father tells them all to leave me alone so I can get some rest. He pushes me into our cave and hugs me so tight that it's hard to breath. He pulls away and rests his hands on my shoulders, looking at me all glassy eyed. I have seen him cry only once before so seeing him this way makes me a little emotional. He only cried when my mother was killed, so I don't take this situation lightly. Father sits me down to talk about the time of endangerment of the sirens when the water dragons were over populating the seas. He finally answers a question I've had for so many years: "Why can't sirens use their singing to lure in pray?"

Witches that traveled the sea with humans saw us as a threat and either used spells to take the power from our voice or kill us, cursing future generations for all eternity, or so they thought. My mother was the first one since then and everyone saw her as the "chosen one from the prophecy" and I was the second. And being the second and more powerful, they believe it is truly me who is the chosen one. Father said that our elder, before I was born, told a tale of a beautiful siren woman who was going to save our people with her voice, a voice that can take over all creatures, big and small. I groan, knowing that I will be worshipped no matter what I say. "But father, how do I know if I am the chosen one? What if I don't want to be?" He growls at the last question and shakes his head. Father tells me that everyone knows that I am the chosen one and that I have to grow up and take my rightful place as the chosen one. I huff and swims out of his cave and as soon as I do, I'm surrounded by sirens giving me compliments and acting like I'm famous.

"STOP WORSHIPPING ME! LEAVE ME ALONE!" I yell at them but they don't stop, they don't listen. I try to push through the crowd but there are too many of them and my siren song don't work on them, so I'm stuck. I scream in frustration and thrusts my arms forward, palms facing out, and they all fly back a few feet. They all look at me, surprised and they bow to me. As they bow, I swim past them and into my cave. I look at my hands confused, never seeing, let alone, doing that before. I sigh and float down to the floor of my cave, and hope that no one followed me. I hear a knock and I roll my eyes. "Go away! I want to be alone..... please?" They swim in anyway and I'm kind of glad they do. I watch him, slightly feeling better, as he sits right in front of me and smiles comfortingly.
