I close the door behind me and slump down to the floor, a foolish grin spread on my face. I bite my thumb nail, a peculiar habit that I have developed over my 14 years. I jumb to my feet and begin a happy little Dance, my heart light and full of joy.
He kissed me! He finally kissed me! The boy I've been crushing on since third grade. The boy who acted like he didn't know I existed. The boy of my dreams. It was so awkward, yet so perfect. And so spontaneous! We barely ever talked, but it was like a scene out of a corny movie.
It happened after school, at the end of track practice. I was the last girl to leave, so I was by myself, taking the shortcut through the woods to my house. I heard the leaves rustle behind me. Terrified that I was being followed by a pervert, I picked up a branch and swung it at him with all my might. Luckily he ducked right in time.
After I apologized and he said it was cool, we started walking together, his house was only a few block away from mine after all. We talked about school, and track and anything else that popped up. But when my house came into view and I told him I had to go, he leaned in, cupped my face in his warm hands, and kissed me. After a good 10 seconds, he pulled away looking shocked at himself. He ran off into the woods without another word.
I sneak into the kitchen, very carefully making sure my mom doesn't see me. I snatch up the phone and a bag of doritos, then dash back to my room. I flop on to my bed and start dialing. Right about now your probably wondering we I need to use the home phone, not a cell phone. Well, thanks to Mr. Hordin, my math teacher, I got a D on a test and then my mom took my beloved phone away. Doesn't my life sound fun?
"OMG, Kara, guess what?" I shriek into the mic.
"What? What? Did someone die?" she cries.
"Collin kissed me!" I yell, a warm feeling spreading through my body at the thought of it.
I'm certain shes about to say something back when my door creaks open. I quickly hit the end call button
and stuff the phone under my pillow just as my mom enters the room. She throws my cell phone onto the bed with a stern look on her face.
"One more D and it's gone for a month" she threatens. She leaves the room and head back out to the living room.
I pick up my phone and put it on the charger when I realize it's dead. Ugh. I pick up a book (Into the Looking Glass) and read while I munch on doritos. After a few minutes of reading (I have a short attention span) I throw the book down in frustration and look out my window to see a storm brewing. Strange. Didn't the weather forecast say no rain?
While I continue to gaze out the window, something catches my eye. Nestled in the roots of the old willow tree out back, lies my math binder. I rub my sleeve against the cold pane of glass, but it's still there. I
continue wiping at the window. I'm sure I didn't put it there. I get enough out doors time at track. I don't even bring my math binder home! How the hell did it get out there? Still a bit confused, I go to the living room to confront my mom. This must be some kind of trick.
"Mom, why is my math binder outside?" I say as I gesture towards the window.
"Did you bring it home to study?" she asks hopefully.
"If I studied, would I be failing math?" I point out.
"I suppose not, I guess you'll just have to go get it" as the words escape her lips, the sky is eliminated with a bright flash of lightning, followed by load thunder.
"Or you could just wait until the rain stops" She says nervously. By now it's pouring rain, the droplets hitting the glass with an uneven rythem. A bit like Rebeca Black when she sings Friday, don't you think?
I take glance outside and discover that that the binder is now open! Ok, something's not right here. Now the pages are being soaked, ruining all years notes. Flabbergasted, I run to my room, grab a rain coat, a umbrella, and rain boots, then return to the living room.
"Mom I'll be quick, don't worry" I assure her. She gives me a small nod of approval, a worried look on her face. I nod back, open the sliding door that leads outside, and step through.
I'm practically blinded as I make my way through the yard, which is has already turned to mud. Halfway across, another flash of lighting brightens the sky, making me hesitant about continuing. But I need my binder, so I keep going.
When I reach the old willow tree I reach out for my binder. I grasp it in my wet hands and pull, but it's stuck. I squint into the rain a realize it's wedged in between to thick roots. I pull, again, harder this time, but it's no use.
I turn around, knowing its not coming out and that I'm safer inside, when something tugs on my foot. I look down in horror to see a tree root era ing around my foot. It gives a strong yank, and pulls me to the ground. I look to the house, where my mom is inside watching TV. Are you kidding me! Your daughter is going into a dangerous storm and all you can think about is the new family guy episode! Get your priorities straight lady.
I claw at the ground, looking for a handhold. Nothing. All that's there is mud. I try twisting my foot around, but the root has a solid grip on me, dragging me towards the willow's trunk. I manage to get a good look behind me and see the rest of the roots are spreading apart, revealing a gaping hole.
Tears begin to flow out of my amber eyes while the roots pull me closer. My life isn't a corny romance movie any more. It's a horror movie. Soon I feel my feet dangling off the edge of the hole and try fighting harder, but to no avail. In seconds most of my body is in the dark black void, and now I'm falling, watching the last bit of my world disappear, for what I hope is not forever.
