I burst through the doors leading to a balcony outside the club, leaving the blaring music and flashing lights behind me as the doors slowly close. I stride quickly across the cement flooring, placing my hands on the glass railing as I try to control my breathing.
What the hell is wrong with you?
My subconscious scolds me as images of Dylan almost kissing me flash through my mind. I know that Dylan has feelings for me...I've known for a long while; but, I can't be with him. I can't risk ruining our friendship or losing him...despite my feelings or anyone else's opinions on the matter. Dylan is the closest thing to a family that I have; my parents are dead, and as far as I know, there is no family left on either side. I have no one left...no one except for Dylan.
I glance up at the bright lights of downtown Portland, and I can't help but admire how beautiful the city is. Even with all the chaos of the city, it still has a beauty and peacefulness to it...and honestly, it's soothing and relaxing to look at. I suddenly hear a roar of laughter beside me, startling me because I hadn't noticed anyone on the deck when I first came out. I glance towards the group of men standing in a circle around a firepit, each of them holding a beer in one hand and a cigarette in another; But, my eyes fall on one man in particular...
His hair was long and brown...falling to his shoulders in waves and curls. His skin was tan as if he had been in the sun, and one of his arms was covered in dark tattoos. His white t-shirt hung low enough to expose the dark ink on his chest, his dark jeans clinging tightly to his lean figure. His chiseled facial features were exposed by the light of the flames...and I would be lying if I said I didn't find him attractive; honestly, he was probably the hottest guy I had ever seen.
I can't seem to take my eyes off him when suddenly his eyes catch my gaze. My heart drops to my stomach and I quickly look away, my cheeks instantly flushing red.
Maybe he didn't see me?
I question myself before slowly glancing back discretely in hopes that I am right.
Nope. You're wrong.
His eyes lock with mine once more, a small smirk playing on his lips as he catches me staring once again. My heart drops to my stomach once more as he steps forward and begins walking towards me...his eyes focused on me and me only.
I quickly turn around, my heart pounding rapidly in my chest as I debate whether or not I should stay or run. How do I always find myself in these awkward situations? Oh, that's right...because I always put myself in them, that's why...
Just as I decide to leave this terribly awkward situation, I am startled by the sound of a man clearing his throat to catch my attention.
Shit.
I slowly glance over my shoulder to find him standing there, less than a foot behind me.
"Hello..." He says quietly with an English accent, his lips lifting into a soft smile. His eyes meet mine once again, and suddenly I am mesmerized by how beautifully green they are. I quickly look away, my body suddenly getting hot as embarrassment floods through me.
"Hi..." I reply in almost a whisper, because at the moment I can't seem to think well enough to form words or even speak.
"Beautiful night, isn't it?" He says casually in an attempt to make conversation.
"Yeah, it is..." I manage to reply as I nervously tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.
"So what's a girl like you doing out here alone?" He asks curiously. I glance up at him as his eyes travel down my body...biting his bottom lip as if he likes what he sees.
"I uh...I guess I just needed some fresh air..." I answer him nervously. I can't help but feel like he is looking at me as if I am some sort of prey, which makes me feel even more uneasy than before.
"So you're here alone?"
I look at him curiously, unsure of why he is so concerned with whether or not I am alone...
"No...I came with my friends. They're just inside..." I reply suspiciously, the uneasiness inside of me growing stronger by the second. Though he's incredibly attractive, there is something about him and the way he is eyeing me that sends a chill down my spine.
"You want to get out of here?" He asks, catching me completely off guard.
"What?" I ask him with surprise as he takes a step towards me.
"I want you to leave with me..." He answers, or more so demands quietly, his deep green eyes now locked on mine. For a brief second, I am unable to move...unable think. I seem to be mesmerized by his beautiful green eyes until suddenly, they turn black.
I jump back in shock, fear coursing through me as I suddenly am snapped back into reality. Images of my nightmare begin to flood my mind as I attempt to back away from him, though my legs seem to be shaking uncontrollably.
"I um...my friends are probably wondering where I am. I should go..." My voice shakes in reply. I turn to walk away, but before I can even take a step, his hand wraps around my wrist tightly...stopping me dead in my tracks.
A strange sensation courses through my body the second his skin touches mine. Images of him screaming in agony and what looks to be an angel behind him flash through my mind. She approaches him slowly, taking his face in her hands as a tear of blood runs down his cheek. A flash of light appears just as she leans down to kiss him...
He suddenly releases my wrist, and I am snapped back to reality. I watch him as he stares at his hand, shock and disbelief evident in his eyes.
He must have felt it too...
He glances from his hand and back to me, a shock of fear coursing through me the moment his eyes meet mine. I quickly turn on my heel in an attempt to escape.
"Wait!" He yells after me, his tone sounding as if he is pleading rather than demanding. He quickly grabs my hand to try and stop me again.
"Let me go!" I scream, and without hesitation I slap him across the face with my free hand. He stops abruptly, giving me the opportunity to pull my hand away from his grasp. I run towards the club doors as fast as I can...praying in my head that he doesn't follow.
I don't know what happened the moment his hand made contact with mine; the strange sensation I felt and the images that flashed through my mind is something that has never happened to me before. But, there is one thing I am certain of...and that is that the angel I saw in the images...was me.
