Leaving the Past

There comes a time in life when a man's urge to find himself gets so strong that he has no choice but to give in. This point in our lives happens when we suddenly realize we don't have the usual people around us to back us up. No one is there to listen and no one is there to give a hand. The person will then try to look for a way to feel like he belongs in a world that is new to him, in a world that seems bizarre. But for a man who has no one and has nothing, what is there to look for? Is it worth fighting for? Is it even worth trying?

In my 25 years of existence, though I may be young to many, I learned that many things are not permanent. But that will not matter for as long as what you have is true. My name is Scott Fisher and this is my story.

2007

"Scott! We have to go now or we'll get stuck in traffic!" My mom, Lizella, shouted from the bottom of the stairs.

"I'm coming mom! I just need to get something." I shouted back.

"We'll be in the car! You're dad's getting impatient as usual!" She hollered followed by the front door slamming.

I looked back at the room where I grew up. Taking in all that I can and remembering all the good times I've spent here. I looked at a particular photo in my room.

Most of the best memories I had were with my two best friends, Louie and Ginny

Most of the best memories I had were with my two best friends, Louie and Ginny. I miss them already. I miss my family and I miss everything. I can't believe leaving for college will be this disheartening.

I heard the car horn went off and I was taken back to reality. I shook my head and turned to leave when I heard the familiar rustling of leaves from my window. I smiled.

"You wouldn't leave without saying goodbye would you?" My best friend said peeking in my room from the now opened window. He knows just about every opening we have in our house.

Without a word I went to the window and gave him the tightest hug that I can. "I'm gonna miss you so much Lou."

"I miss you already buddy." He said not breaking from the embrace.

"Is Ginny with you?" He shot me an apologetic look and shook his head no.

"She's still guilty about everything." He said with embarrassment ringing in his voice. "As guilty as I am feeling but I can't let my best friend leave without telling him that I'm going to miss him."

I smiled genuinely at him as I pulled back and looked in his eyes. "That's okay Lou. It'll take more than that to break the 15 years of friendship the three of us have. And besides, I always knew she loved you more than me. I just had to take my chances."

"If you only knew..." He said as he looked back at me with the smile that I grew up with then he sighed.

"I should have known." My mom broke us from our goodbyes. We looked at her smiling figure leaning against the door frame.

"Good day Mrs. Fisher!" Louis greeted the way he's used to.
