I didn't go back to the hotel. I didn't turn back to the S.H.I.E.L.D. building. I didn't head for Hydra. I headed for my old hideaway by the airport. I wanted to leave.
I wasn't sure where the strong and sudden feeling had come from, but I felt like leaving was the right choice. My backpack was still exactly where I'd left it. The money inside was just enough to get a plane ticket.
I've always wanted to see Vienna, I thought to myself, shouldering the pack and readjusting my baseball cap. That's bound to be far enough away.
The tablet that was now safely packed in my bag gave a quiet ding, letting me know that Skye had just said something to me. I ignored it and continued casually into the airport.
It was crowded with people coming and going. I passed by without anyone noticing. I walked up to one of the ticket counters. "One-way ticket to Vienna please," I said.
The man nodded. "One moment please." He tapped the screen a few times and handed me the ticket. "Have a good day sir!" he said with a cheerful smile.
I dipped my head and wove through the crowds, skipping over the security check. I didn't want them discovering my metal arm. I checked my ticket and realized that the man had given me the flight that was leaving in twenty minutes.
I quickened my pace, making it to the entrance just as they were reaching the end of their line. I stepped behind the last person and handed the person my ticket.
When I had sat down on the plane I took out my tablet I saw that Skye had changed several things. The first I noticed was a group of notes on the home screen. I turned on Airplane Mode before I forgot and then read them.
Bucky, where are you? Why aren't you at the hotel? Steve just went to say hello and said you weren't there. What are you doing?
Helllllloooooo? James Buchanan Barnes. Do you copy?
As I sat there, another one appeared, even though I wasn't connected to the internet. You have Airplane Mode on. Why do I think this is a bad sign?
I turned off the tablet and slipped it into my bag, staring silently out the window as the plane took off.
"-enjoy your flight."
I buckled myself in and leaned back. It was a long flight and I didn't want it to take forever.
"Welcome to Vienna. Please prepare for exiting the plane. Thank you for flying with us," the overly polite computer voice woke me up.
I waited for everyone else to get off before I followed the crowd. I took out the tablet as I walked, turning off Airplane Mode and opening one of the notes. I deleted everything that Skye had typed and put in my own message. Skye, I need abandoned places in Vienna. Please don't tell Captain America where I am.
Almost as soon as I'd finished the words vanished and were replaced by some other, rather angry looking, ones. BUCKY. VIENNA? REALLY? IF THIS WAS ANYONE ELSE I WOULD PERSONALLY INSTALL A VIRUS ON ALL OF THEIR TECH!
Please don't do that, I typed back. Just tell me where to go.
I walked out the door and started wandering the streets with the tablet in my hand. The note flickered with letters as they appeared. I'm opening the maps for you. Are you looking?
I typed back that I was and the maps opened. A red line stretched off the screen. Right in the middle was a red dot. A note appeared in the corner. That's the closest I could find. Have fun and don't die. You'd better not get into any trouble either.
I didn't bother to type a response. I knew she probably wasn't expecting one.
I followed the tablet's directions to an abandoned apartment building. I smiled. I promised myself that when I next saw Skye I would tell her she was the best. The place was perfect for what I needed.
I walked inside and started climbing up the stairs. I figured that the top level would likely be the best place to stay hidden. I ignored all of the doors until the stairs ended. I stepped through the door and found myself in an apartment.
I was surprised that the door would open right into an apartment from the stairs, but quickly dismissed it.
It was rather crowded. Random things were piled up everywhere. There was a couch and a coffee table in the living room. The living room and the kitchen were separated by a low wall. The kitchen still had all of its appliances, none of which worked except for the toaster.
By the way cobwebs clung to everything, I figured nobody had stepped foot inside for a long time.
Thank you Skye, I thought. This is perfect.
_____________
Hey everyone! I hope you enjoyed the chapter. This took really long to write (surprisingly). The next one will likely go faster. It's also a little short but oh well. It's better than four thousand words. XD
May the wind blow strong in your sails! Have a good day (or night) Avengers!
For my reference, for later on. The Winter Soldier trigger words. Longing, Rusted, Seventeen, Daybreak, Furnace, Nine, Benign, Homecoming, One, Freight car. (No those won't be written in Russian. I want everyone to know what they are.)
