The year is 2035 – yes a bland start to a predictable story – but that's how it is. The world has gone to hell, the virus was adapting, evolving to suit the environment. Good for them, bad for us.

They started off slow – that's what the records say anyways – near a shuffle or brisk stroll with a walnut sized brain. Then they evolved, adapted to a jog, funny that. We all brushed off the worry of more attacks, they were slow and we were superior to them. Those that prepared and preached that they would change, that the virus would evolve were classed as lunatics and laughingstocks. I personally wished they had listened.

Because being born and raised in a virus torn society was a bitch. Things that once were ten, maybe twenty years ago no longer existed, peace and safety were no longer guaranteed. 2012 is when the Infected began to evade the traps, setting their own for a flock of meat to waltz into. Walkers turned into runners, runners into sprinters and then they became cunning.

Being chased by a sprinter with a necklace of tongues and a belt of skulls was not a highlight of my day or week. At least I wasn't the one that ended up falling in the rotting corpses this time, that privilege was my Unit Brother Adam's. He's still pretty spry for an old guy.

"Dean. It is nearly time," Adam's voice echoed in the empty room.

Ah yes, the event that I have trained nearly all my life and especially the last three years for.

Arvok Mechanics had created and finally approved human testing time travel. This of course was when they were finally able to bring the test subjects back and didn't have the risk of their flesh and innards decorating the walls. Fun that.

Lucky me, I was the one chosen to go. High test scores and field scores with minimal to no loss on my runs. It didn't help that my father was the lead scientist and my mother a high-ranking Gunner. I was the one that came closest to beating her efficiency target score, thirty headshots between the eyes of a sprinter.

"You know three years of preparation and learning of those times and yet, I cannot help but feel worried." I state, turning my eyes to Adam. He was my Squad Brother no matter the twenty year age gap between him and me; he was the only one that truly seemed to understand me and my worries.

He was my mentor, teacher, and my best friend; I was going to miss him.

His grey eyes softened and with a deep sigh, he seemed to age even more. "There is something I need you to do Dean, something that may hurt and just... This is my entire fault, the loss of Eden and the death of my wife. If you can, I need you to save her; she was the hope we all needed."

I couldn't help but frown up at him. "Sir?"

"Dean, I chose you for this task as it will only be you who could stop the utter disaster that was Eden's Falling. My wife was a smart woman with a mind that could match no other and the day that Eden fell, she had come to me and the council saying that there could be a cure; that she alone had found it." Adam's voice broke and when he looked at me, all I could see were the mirrored eyes of a broken man. "I went on a raid that night as we had seen Sprinters and their head hunter, it was of course a trap and when we left, they struck."
