Chapter 2

I sat by the phone waiting for the call. The police had been doing forensics on a watch they had found about a week ago, they didn’t know for certain who it was but I had a shrewd idea. The phone rang and they told me what I already knew. It was my step fathers’ watch, but they told me just because they found they couldn’t lay charges, it wasn’t enough proof. I walked outside and took a look around, nothing was looking unusual. It was as though nothing had happened at all. I kept walking around to the machinery shed, that’s when I first thought I saw a shadowy figure lurking. I wasn’t sure if I imagined it or not because when I blinked it was gone. I felt uneasy and not for the first time that day I was on the phone to the police. They said they would send someone over but it could take a while as they had most of their men out at a different disturbance. That was the problem with living in a small town; the police couldn’t handle more than one crime at a time. I moved back towards the house to grab the .22, we only ever used it when we had to put cattle down but I figured this was an urgent situation. Before I got even halfway there he opened fire, he had an automatic weapon. Of course he did. Just makes life that little bit more difficult. I got inside but I wasn’t sure if I’d done the smart thing. He was a professional at this, he’d cut off the generator to stop me from contacting anybody. It was hard enough to get mobile reception around here to get that first call anyway. I grabbed the rifle as I heard the front door open. I kept quiet and I kept low, this bastard wasn’t going to get me.  There were no windows to escape from in this room and the closest room with a window was across the hallway. I had to make a move or I would be dead. Sooner or later he would find me and there was no way in hell I would let that happen so I sprinted through the hallway and into the closest room. That was a bad mistake. He had seen me and shot about two rounds at me, he’d gotten my leg, it was the same leg as last time as well. I leant onto my right leg and limped over to the window, I started climbing out the window and fell out awkwardly, I started limping away getting out my mobile. The first I realised he also had a knife was when it was in me. He’d hit where my appendix used to be. I fell over and heard another shot. It was from a different weapon yet again. I hadn’t seen the police pull up, the last I knew was him shooting my step-father. I blacked out.
