7:30am. Read the clock right above my radio in my Camry as I pulled into the school's parking lot. Always early, huh Em? Grabbing my phone, I slowly emerged from the car. Looking around I saw people crowding around numerous cars while some stragglers trudged into the school. Midwest High. A regular school with regular people. Nothing special. Filled with the same groups of people any other school would have.
Me. I like being alone. Well..sometimes. It's not like anyone ever takes the time to get to know me, anyway. You get use to the isolation after a while. Unlocking my locker, I could feel someone's eyes on me. Trying to ignore the feeling, I began getting my books. Ignore it. Setting my notebook down, I sighed and decided to confront the criminal making me feel even more insecure about myself. I looked up ready for a disgusted look on someone's face as they witnessed mine. I don't really consider myself attractive.
Instead, there was an intrigued look on the person's face. The face belonged to Simon Comet. One of the many boys at my school who had been graced with charming good looks. His blue orbs met my hazel ones. Staring for what seemed like forever, I looked away, grabbed my books and walked into the opposite direction. Creep. Watching me like I was on the Discovery Channel. I'm used to people looking at me like they're better than me. I am beneath them. I realize that now. But the way he looked at me. Weird.
Proceeding into class, I kept my head down and sat at my desk. "Hey, Emil." I looked up from my hands and looked over at Jillian. She's one of the few people who'll talk to me. "Hey, Jillian." She touched my hand "Em, I told you to to call me Jill. We're practically best friends." She said looking at me with concern on her face.
"Best friends? We barely hang out." I said, skeptical of her comment.
"I know. That's why tonight you're coming with me to a party. No refusing, I will come to your house and drag you. Ooh! Even better, I'll come and help you dress beautifully." She said cheerfully. I looked at her like she was crazy.
"But-" I tried to say. "Alright class, settle down." Mr. Montgomery said while walking into class. I turned around in my desk and listened to him.
After three hours of boring class after boring class, it was time for lunch. The halls flooded with people made it hard for me to get past them to my locker. Someone shoved me and pushed me into a locker, making me drop my books and hit my shoulder on the lock on one of the lockers. "Ah!" I cried as I sighed and rubbed my sore shoulder. I went to grab my books when I grabbed someone's hand instead. Such a cliche.
I looked up at the person with shocked eyes. Simon. I quickly retracted my hand from his and tried to grab my books but he stopped me. "No, I got it." He said as he swept them up from the floor. I stood up and rubbed my shoulder slightly "Thanks." I mumbled as I looked down. "I shouldn't have been in the way. It's my fault." I said blaming myself. Like I did for everything.
He looked at me with concerned eyes. I hated that look. I'm not some lost puppy that needs help. I can handle myself. "Are you kidding? I saw the whole thing. It definitely wasn't your fault. Why would you blame yourself?" He put his hand on my hurt shoulder and softly rubbed it. Creep..although it did feel better. "I blame myself for everything.." I mumbled. He sighed.
"Locker number?" He asked lifting my head up slowly.
"256." I mumbled a little louder. He grabbed my hand and led me down the hall, surprisingly the hall wasn't as crowded. I tried to free my hand from his but he had a tight grip on me. It felt foreign to have someone else's hand in mine, let alone a guy's. "Combination?" The sound of his voice snapped me out of my thoughts. "Classified." I said clearly. He laughed."Fine. You put it in." He said standing aside.
I put the combination in the lock and unlocked it. He put my books inside. Why couldn't he just let me do it? "C'mon." He started walking down the hall again, with my hand still in his. I stopped. A confused look spread across his face "What's wrong?" I held up our hands.
"Can you let me go? I can walk on my own." He smiled slightly and rolled his eyes, amusingly. He let my hand go and chuckled. We walked into the cafeteria. Instantly Jillian ran up to me. "Oh my God! Emil, I didn't know what happened to you! We were waiting for you." She pointed towards Garrett and Harper. Her two friends who I sometimes hang out with when I'm with her.
"Calm down, Jillian. I'm fine, I just had a little accident in the hallway. Simon helped me out.." She looked at me then him. He smiled at her.
"Thanks for helping Em." She smiled cheerfully.
"No problem. She needed it." He said patting my sore shoulder. I winced. His expression instantly changed.
He started to rub it with his hand and apologized for forgetting. He gently massaged it. "Thanks." I started mumbling again. He gave me a small smile and looked in the direction of his table of friends.
"It was nice meeting you, Jillian. Bye, Em." His hand slid down my arm and reached my hand. He gave it a squeeze then let it go and walked off. Jillian looked at me with an open mouth. "What?" I started walking to her table.
"I can't believe you talked to him, and he touched you!" She went to sit beside Garrett while I sat beside Harper.
"Who are you talking about?" Harper's curiosity clearly evident in her voice.
"Simon Comet. He helped her in the hallway and touched her!" Jillian excitedly yelled. I rolled my eyes.
"It's not a big deal. He was just being nice. It doesn't mean anything." I reassured them.
"It is a big deal. This is the guy every girl drools all over." Garrett stated. "Everyone but you of course. You don't show interest in anyone."
"You say that like it's bad." I replied to him.
"Em, honey. It is. You haven't had a crush since probably the third grade, sweetie." Harper's concerned voice rang in my ear. Ugh..she's worrying..
"So what? I don't need a guy to make me happy. I don't need anyone period." I crossed my arms and took one of Garrett's french fries.
"Just promise us one thing." Jillian said. Uh oh..
"What?" I asked. They all looked at each other then me.
"You'll give him a chance." They all replied. I groaned and mumbled an agreement.
They're lucky I like them..
