I look down at the paper again, but my mind keeps wandering. Any other day I would love hearing the story of how angels and vampires mixed into an ancient werewolf bloodline, but I've heard the story of my ancestors a million times.
I tune out my tutor and begin to daydream. Since I have no idea what my mate will look like, all I can think to dream of us how I'll feel when I find them. I imagine it'll be the best feeling in the world.
That is, if they're a guy. If my mate is a girl, all I can imagine is a feeling of raw panic. If they're a girl, we'll be killed for being mates. That's a very good possibility.
"Melanie!" my tutor yells, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Were you even paying attention to the lesson? This is important stuff, and you are next in line to be alpha. Pay attention next time and I expect a paper on Vampire marriage law by Monday. Now go to training!"
I sheepishly nod as I gather my things. It's not surprising he caught me not paying attention, considering the class consists of my siblings, Jason and Lucy, and me. Still, that punishment was a little harsh. Vampire marriage law is complicated.
I drop my bag in my room and quickly change into workout clothes. My long brown hair goes into a bun as I check that my water bottle is filled. I grab it and run out into the front lawn.
I barely made it in time. Battle training and strategy takes place in front of the main house, but it seems like miles from my bedroom. For the first time in a week, I'm early enough to get to pick my partner. I survey my selection before spotting Benny.
I wouldn't call Benny a friend, he's more of an acquaintance, but he is a good partner. I call his name and he waves me over.
"Hey Melanie," he says as I approach his spot.
I barely have time to say hello before the lesson begins. The instructor trains is hard, but the movements are almost automatic by now. I have been training for years, longer than the guard, since only the strongest wolves can be the alpha of a pack. Thankfully, sparring is first in our routine today, so I am left no time to think.
I stand across from Benny and begin to strategize. Unlike most partners, Ben is fairly unpredictable, which makes him a better opponent. He takes me by surprise by attacking almost immediately, but I'm only stunned for a second. Unfortunately, that is enough for him to tackle me. To gain the upper hand, I transform into my wolf form, forcing him to back off to avoid my claws. He transformed, and the fight became a blur of claws and teeth.
After what felt like hours, I ended up on top with Bens neck between my teeth. The fight was over, but training was not. Now that sparring was out of the way, we began doing mindless exercise, like running and push-ups. At the third lap around the pack houses, my mind began to wonder. Tomorrow I would be 17. Tomorrow I could find my mate. I was terrified.
All my life, I've been told that you must have a male mate if you are female, and vice versa. To be with someone of your own gender was death. I wasn't sure, but there was a chance, a fairly good chance, that my mate would be a girl. And she will be the death of me.
Our trainer, Melea Ozwic, blows her whistle, signaling the end of training. I quickly gather up my things and try to shake off my thoughts from earlier. I run inside the main house to the alpha quarters. I walk past my fathers study and into the bathroom. I quickly shower and dress, before running to the kitchen to make dinner.
I only make three plates, one for each of my siblings and one for me. I'm assuming my father won't be back for dinner, since he wasn't in his study. I'm guessing he's in a meeting or some other alpha duty, but I don't really care.
Smelling the pasta I'm cooking, my 15 year old brother, Jason runs downstairs. Lucy, our little sister, trails behind him. They both sit down as I dish food onto each plate. I hand them theirs before taking a seat.
"I need more than this!" complains Jason at the same time Lucy shouts, "This looks good!"
I roll my eyes at Jason and tell him to get his own, before thanking Lucy. We continue to eat as I notice how much they contrast each other. Jason has the brown hair and eyes of dad, while Lucy has blond hair and hazel eyes. I seem to be a combination of the two, with the same messy hair as Jason and beautiful eyes of Lucy. Despite their differences in looks, Jason gets on better with Luce than he ever has with me.
Before I know it, it's time for bed. I leave the dishes in the sink and the food in the fridge for dad. Yawning, I make my way to the stairs. First I check on Jason, then Lucy, who are both already in bed. Following their example, I brush my teeth and head off to bed.
I sit on the edge of my bed. Instead of tired, I feel terrified. Tomorrow I may meet the love of my life, and tomorrow we may be executed for it. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.
I lay down on my bed and close my eyes. I don't feel tired, but I know I'll need rest. After what seems like hours, I finally drift off. Maybe for the last time.
