Every time Gajeel led Levy into their shop, he couldn't help the smile that made its way to his face when he saw her eyes widen in excitement.
How could he? Her smile was just too contagious. "Oh my gosh, Gajeel," she gushed as she ran through the gigantic shelves, getting lost in rows upon rows or literature she just wanted to read.
"It's beautiful!"
He chuckled slightly. "The whole thing was your idea, shortstack. I make souvenirs and you sell books. Whatever it takes to bring in the bacon, and keep ya happy."
Gajeel positioned himself behind the counter, watching as customers glanced at Levy with a knowing glance, smiling slightly.
Unlike most people, their usual customers accepted Levy's disability with open arms, and didn't get frustrated with her when she didn't remember things. After all..She relived the same day over and over; they couldn't help but take a little pity upon her.
She ran up to him, holding up a book and beaming, "would it be okay if I read for a little while? I mean, most businesses aren't busy in the mornings."
He nodded slightly, pointing towards a sitting area in his field of vision. "Just stay where I can see ya, okay?" "Hai!" He watched as she practically tripped over her own feet trying to get to the sitting area, and bit his lip, snorting, trying desperately to suppress a laugh. The day went on, with Levy coming up to him every now and then to ask about reading, 'just one more book.' And he always answered with a yes, chuckling quietly to himself. This was one of the few things he liked about her short term memory loss. The look of wonder and curiousness on her face; it was enough to make his iron heart swell.
But the moment was shattered...right after Levy had asked about reading another book, he had walked in. Gajeel sat behind the counter in a swivel office chair, polishing a metal dragon bookend, when he heard the bell above the door to their shop ring. "Hello, welcome to our shop, feel free to take a look around and ask for help..." He muttered, intent on cleaning the small, yet detailed, knick knack. He paused slightly as a shadow appeared over his desk, and a deep voice, slurring slightly, replied with, "Where can I find me a Levy Mcgarden?"
As soon as Gajeel heard the man's voice, his blood began to boil in anger, and he stood up so fast to face the man that he knocked the swivel chair he had been sitting in over.
"What do you want with her?" His voice was cold, the tips almost bursting into flames with fury. But he held back.
"I want my girlfriend back." his voice was whiny, and almost incoherent because of how bad his slurring was.
Gajeel growled. "Get out of here. Yer not supposed to be anywhere close to her, there's a restraining order. Get out, or I'lll call the cops on ya!"
He stopped trying to hold back his anger, and had raised his voice. He ignored the stares and Levy's worried gaze, completely focused on the man.
The man stumbled back a bit, barely able to catch himself.
"F-fine! But don't think I won't come back later!" He hurried off, all too eager to leave the store.
Gajeel sighed, and looked over at Levy, who's eyes had watered slightly. She remembered him...and knew what he had done to her.
"Levy...c'mere.." He held his arms out to embrace the girl, and she quickly crossed the room, throwing herself into his arms, shaking.
Gajeel smoothed out her cerelean curls, trying to comfort his friend.
But...of course...Gajeel couldn't keep all of her demons from reaching her...But he could be there for her afterwards, as a friend to guide her from the dark, suffocating hurt, to happiness.
People didn't dare interrupt, either. This had occurred a few times before, and they knew the only person capable of calming Levy was Gajeel.
He rubbed her back soothingly, not minding that his t-shirt was soaked now.
"Hey..do you wanna go home early?"
She looked up at him, her face tear stained.
He hated it. He hated anyone who had the nerve to make her cry. He hated the broken look her eyes had when she saw her ex boyfriend again.
It's one of the things that made him want to shelter Levy from the world.
He didn't want her to feel hurt every time she laid eyes on that horrible guy...
And...He wanted people to stop telling him that she had no quality in life, because she was living the same day over and over...He didn't know what he would do if she heard that.
Hell...He didn't know what he would do without her.
For almost a year she hadn't left his side...it would be devastating for him if she was suddenly ripped from his grasp..But he knew...no matter how hard he tried...He could never be selfish enough to shelter her away from the outside world. Then she would have no quality in life. Because he would rip away all freedom she had... He could never do it.
He had barely managed to hear her utter a small "yes" over all of his overwhelming thoughts, but stood up and announced the shop would be closing in a few minutes. He helped Levy pack up the small amount of stuff they had brought, and after one last check to make sure no customers where still inside, started to head home.
On their way back to the apartment, Gajeel looked over at her, and offered a smile. "Don't worry about him, alright? I placed a restraining order on him a long time ago...He can't hurt you ever again...and even if he tried...he'd have to kill me first."
The Blue-headed girl looked up at him, a shocked expression on her face. "You can't just die and leave me. You would never, right?"
His smile widened, and he ruffled her hair. " 'course not. I can't leave my shrimp to pay rent. That's not fair to ya."
She puffed out her cheeks and kicked his shin. " there's not any other reason that you wouldn't leave me?!" She whined, hoping he'd say something a little more...heart warming.
He tapped his chin, pretending to be in deep thought. "Well...I also can't leave ya cause ya can't cook to save yer life...so...I guess that's another biggy."
She hit his arm, but giggled slightly. It was true. She was really, really bad at cooking. And she knew he would never let her live it down. Gaje suddenly pulled her out of her train of thought when he suddenly bent down...and hugged her. "Levy..I couldn't ever leave you...because..your my best friend...if I did...i could never forgive myself for not being able to protect you to the bitter end. Cause...those are my intentions. I'm not leaving your side...even if you want to leave mine...until you die. Because I have a duty to protect you. And I have no intentions on throwing those plans out the window." Levy's eyes widened slightly, glad he couldn't see her face. Glad he couldn't see the tears staining her cheeks. Crying made her feel weak...and she didn't like being weak in front of Gajeel.
He pulled away suddenly, clearing his throat, and putting his coat around her shoulders. "Here. I don't want you to catch a cold. Again. You're almost always si- Levy? Why the hell are you cryin'?"
"Thank you Gajeel...for staying with me..."
His concerned glance turned to one of kindness, and he took her hand gently to lead her back to their apartment.
"Yer welcome, Shrimp..."
