"Are you excited?" Kiera asked, turning off her car and ejecting her keys from the ignition. I saw her turn to face me out of the corner of my eye. I sighed and looked at her, letting my dark hair fall across my right eye.

"First day back is always the hardest." I spat wisdom, biting my lower lip slightly. "It just sucks that I'm starting mid-year."

Kiera shifted in her seat, and I knew she was uncomfortable talking about it. Heck, even my parents were uncomfortable talking about what happened. But I felt that I was ready to come back and that's all that mattered.

"Look, Evie, if you're not ready-"

I unclipped my seatbelt and got out, leaving her to finish her sentence alone in the car. I knew conversations like this were coming, I had just hoped that they would have started at least after the bell rang.

Kiera got out and locked her car, her navy backpack slung lazily across a shoulder. The infamous sign of coolness, I noted. I also took note of the fact that my tattered old red backpack was sat nice and evenly, the straps across both of my shoulders.

"Well, let's go then." Kiera muttered, walking fast-paced to the entrance of our high school. "Now before you're left behind in the social circle, remember Bethany Sylva? A-cup tits, glasses and horrible acne scarring?" She asked, practically skipping up the steps. I nodded. "Well," she barked a humorless laugh. "Imagine this; C-cup tits, hell, maybe even D-cup, contacts, face full of makeup and get this; bleached blonde hair."

I almost tripped up the steps.

"You're kidding," I said, regaining my footing. I stared at Kiera as she nodded vigorously, coming to a standstill outside the front doors.

"And there are these new guys," She continued, sidestepping a student who walked by. I let my hair cover my face again, an automatic defence mechanism that's happened ever since the incident. "Twins. Julian and Mason Parker, total bad boys." She looked at me with a knowing look as she followed the student into the school.

I took a deep breath in. You can always back out now, I thought to myself, my heart beating a thousand beats a minute. I thought I was ready to be back here, to see the same people I'd grown up with, to do the same subjects I'd been doing for years. But being here triggered feelings I'd forgotten even existed.

My stomach churned and I took a step back, feeling the sudden urge to vomit. I spun around, bumping into someone as I rushed back down the steps and towards the trashcan we passed on our way over. I retched into the can, but nothing more than saliva came up.

Kiera was behind me, holding back my hair and rubbing soothing circles into my back. I couldn't even hear what she was saying, but I knew she was saying something. That was the type of person she was. Kiera, the perfect daughter, the perfect friend.
