It was 10:00am when I reached the school on Monday morning. Everybody was already heading to class when I stepped in the school. Far ahead I saw Rachel and, and Jayden. He had his arm around Rachel’s shoulder. It looked like Rachel was laughing.

When me and Jayden went for walks together, he used to tell jokes that were not really funny, but when you see his cute smile then you cannot resist it. You’ll just want to smile. I bet that was exactly what Rachel was doing.

Just then I remembered all the fun times we used to have together. The thoughts just made me want to smile and laugh. When I was in the middle of my thoughts, someone called out my name from somewhere further than I was standing. I turned to see Melissa running towards me panting.

“Cass, I...I was look...looking for you!”

“Okay? But why me?”

“Oh, I dunno, it’s just that, well, never mind. You won’t understand.”

“Okay. Umm...what do you have first period?”

“I’ve got...” she looked at her timetable and said,

“I’ve got Maths class. You?”

“I’ve got Chemistry.”

“Okay, so I’ll see you next period. I have Literacy.”

“Yeah okay.”

She turned around and headed towards her class. She waved at me and I waved back. I practically do not even know this girl and she wants to be with me all the time. She is a little scary.

I started walking towards my class. My time table says that I should be in class Bk-14. I looked down the corridor and surprised that there wasn’t even one person out. I started look for the right class and finally I found it. I knocked on the door, and Miss Pratiba opened it.

“Oh, hello Cass. You are 6 minutes late. Please take a seat.”

I nodded and looked around for an empty seat. The ONLY empty seat was the one near Jayden. I looked up at the teacher and she nodded while pointed to that seat. I slowly walked to the seat. I dropped my bag down on the floor, pulled my chemistry textbook and my notebook out. I looked over to Jayden and he avoided eye contact.

“Okay class, today we will be looking at page 432 in our Chemistry book. Please read silently while I mark the absentees.”

We all flipped to the right pages of our books and then I realised that Jayden didn’t have a text book. I did not want to ask him to share with me but the other half of me did. It is really hard to forget the past and move on. Really hard.

When the teacher had finished marking the absentees, she looked over to the class and then realised that Jayden had nothing on his desk but his notebook and pen.

“Jayden, do you have a textbook?”

He slowly smiled and said,

“Uh...I left it at a friend’s house. We were like,” He looked up at the teacher and smiled,

“We were studying together.”

“Very well done Jayden. But I am sure that Cassie will agree to share with-“

“Um...Miss what if I do it for homework tonight?”

“Oh alright. I’ll check it first thing tomorrow then.”

She smiled and turned to the whiteboard. She got out her marker and started writing something on the board. I peeked at Jayden and saw him writing something on a crumbled up piece of paper. It looked he wrote Idiot on it. To my surprise he crunched it up and chucked it right at the back of Miss Pratiba’s head. The teacher turned and read what the paper said. The class straight away looked down onto their work. I was too surprised to look down and it looked like I was the one who threw it. The teacher glared right at me.

“CASSIE WILLIAMS! PRINCIPLES OFFICE RIGHT NOW!”

“But miss it wasn’t me!”

“NO BUTS! I will be speaking to the principle and to your mother!”

I picked up my bag and books and avoided looking at anyone. Especially Jayden. I marched out of the room and slammed the door as hard as I could. Man! What was Jayden thinking! How he could he do that? He was never like that!

                                                                *********

I was waiting in the principal’s office after I had gotten out of the classroom. The room was full of old, stained trophies that were put on the highest shelf of the room. There were portraits of the old principals that had been i9n the school before. Typical.

Just then the principal came in.

“Uh...Cassie just the person Miss Pratiba was talki-“

“Sir it was not me. You’ve gotta believe me!”

“Okay Cassie if it wasn’t you then who was it?”

“It was...”

Did I have to get him into trouble? I definitely didn’t want to be a snitch!

“It was?”

“I dunno sir.” I said quietly looking down at my feet. “

“Okay, if you don’t confess then I will give you a job to do for the school this week.” I slumped down on my chair and sighed.

“You can be the cafeteria girl. Miss Ria is sick so you will replace her. “He picked out an apron (or I thought it was an apron) and held it so I can see it.

“WHOA! Hold on a sec. You expect me to wear that and also serve people food! For one WEEK!”

“Yep.”

“Sir, I’m sure you have something other than that to do. Right?”

“It’s either this or you will have to scrub out the ladies bathrooms?”

“Fine!”

I grabbed the apron and walked out without another word.

                                               ************

Lunch time came in fast. The cafeteria was already full with people even though the bell didn’t even ring. I tried to act casual so people wouldn’t notice me. But unfortunately, people noticed me.

The first guy in the line winced at me. His face came closer to mine so he could recognise who I was. I bet you he found out who I was because he moved back with a smile.

“Hey everybody! Guess who the new lunch lady is?”

The room roared. The people in it cheered so loud that they couldn’t even hear the guy who was talking. He quieted down the cafeteria and said,

“Well, she is small, weirdly weird and well, l I think that will explain everything.”

The room filled with the words “Williams”

My face was burning up because when I felt it my hands immediately heated up. I could tell that my face became so red. At the entrance, I saw to people coming in with their arms over each others shoulder. It was Rachel and Jayden.

They were coming in without even realising all the commotion going on. Rachel looked to where I was standing. She glared at me. Coldly. She didn’t even crack a smile. Her eyes were slowly changing colour.

At that very moment Melissa came running into the room. She stopped where Rachel and Jayden were standing. She raised her right hand and muttered something slowly. It didn’t sound normal. Then Rachel shook her head and continued talking with Jayden and acted as if nothing had happened.
