Red and blue lights light up the puddles of water draped across the streets. There was a smell of smoke drifting through the city. Coming in and out of the doors and windows. Alex leaned against the half fence in front of the building, I walked over to join him. "Quite a night" he muttered "yes, there's nothing quite like tonight" I said in agreeance.
Alex was the type of person who had little to no expression on his face. To most people he looked dead. In all my years of working with him I've never seen him cry, not even once. Infact I haven't really learned much about who he is. He shows up to work, does his job then leaves. No one knows where he goes "home" some say he hangs out at bars or various clubs around the city. I think he does go home but reads books or something. His house is probably filled with shelves all filled with books. I took another look at him, maybe he doesn't have shelves of books. Maybe he's never read a book in his life.
A large man with a big build walked over. His arms were filled with assorted paperwork. "You two" his large hand pointed at us "these are for you". He handed each of us a pile of paper. I glanced through it "these are for a different case" the man nodded "yes Swift, it's your next case" then walked off. I let out a dramatic sigh "well my next adventure awaits". Me and Alex exchanged looks then I shuffled off into the street.
I threw the pile of paper on the passenger seat, the crime scene photos were almost mocking me. Holding sleep over my head like it was a prize. As if it wasn't bad enough the drive home was sad and quiet. This time of night nothing good was ever on the radio. I was forced to listen to the rain hit my car and the occasional car horns going off.
I came home to my cats sitting in the window waiting for me. I secretly wanted them to tear this paperwork to shreds. When I walked through the door I purposely held the papers loosely just to see if they would try and claw it. All they did was roll around and pull at the tassels at the end of the curtains.
I had a filing cabinet that I put all my papers from work in. I did that to keep them away from the cats. A new tan folder was waiting for me on the desk in my office. I threw all the papers in it then placed it in the file cabinet. Olivia jumped up on my desk and started chewing the lamp. Her paw wrapped around the lamp, it started to move back and forth close to falling off. My arm each out and I caught it just in time. She started making noises cuddling next to the clock. It was 3:45 in the morning Olivia was right it was time to go to bed.
My feet dragged up the stairs, Meredith and Olivia chasing the loose strings. I fell straight into bed kicking the shoes across the room. The lights turned off and the city lights light up the room. Stretching from wall to wall accompanied by a cacophony of sound coming from the street.
