"They're here"
Both of us froze. I would never admit it, but I was terrified. I could feel the blood draining from my face. Words did not have to be exchanged for us to know what he had to do.
Clinging on to a thin piece of hope that the trapdoor would not be seen, I tip-toed my way to my dad's old book shelf. Maybe there might be something here that could be of use.
I blew off the thick layer of dust that aged at least 2 years, and rummaged through it. They were all filled with books, books about wolves. "Everything you need to know about wolves", "How wolves breed", "Qualities of a wolf", "Journal".
Wait what? A journal?
I grabbed the journal and skimmed through the pages. Why hadn't i noticed this before? I caught myself grinning.
"what is it Rach?"
"It's dad's journal!" I was euphoric on my discovery when suddenly, it started to rain.
There was the loud pattering of raindrops above our heads, followed by a clap of lighting and a loud boom of thunder, The ground above us started to shake.
It was clear that the shaking was the wolves running away. Phew! But they'd be back next time, that's for sure...
why'd they run away? Are they scared of water or something?
" Richard's Journal" It read on the cover page.
I flipped to the first page:
EXPERIMENTS
Subject 1: Subject 1 is dead.
Subject 2: Subject 2 seems to have enlarged in size.( Almost double it was before
Subject 3: Subject's fur has turned slightly grey and has the ability to talk! words: yes, no, kill, hunt, human (some of the words we caught it saying.
Subject 4: Subject is the only female. Eyes have turned to crimson red and fangs have fully developed(just like a male) (not sure why)
Subject 5: fur has turned white, and has aged tremendously.
"Alpha must've been subject 5, but... he could talk"
"Idk Sean, it seems like all of them are evolving but all evolving... differently"
Alpha is the wolf pack's leader. He's easy to recognise because of his pearl white fur. He used to be my father's favourite. As a pup, Alpha would lead all the others during meal time, bath time and sleep time. When Father was working, he would sit by his side, like a trained dog. Alpha is tremendously loyal but he is also the extremely aggressive. Alpha had a history of even biting one of the other pups for punishment of misbehaviour. He shows no mercy for wrong behaviour.
As the years went by, Alpha became my guardian. He followed me everywhere and even killed a snake in the woods to protect me. Dad saved Alpha last for his experiment because he wanted Alpha to have the best formula, the most chance of success.
"It says here that Dad experimented on 5, what happened to the other 5?" Sean was asking the exact questions that I had, and we were both desperate for answers.
I flipped a few pages forward and I say all sorts of mathematical formulas, scribblings that i could hardly make out, drawing... Then, something caught my eye.
"The Final formula- the key to everything!"
There were chemical names listed and drawings of a machine and instructions on how to make this "formula"
"This is the formula but what we need is the reverse formula" Sean mumbled and he grabbed the journal off my hands.
"Hey asshole! Why the sudden rush"
Our hands brushed past swiftly but i could not help but feel an oddly satisfying sensation dribble down by entire body. whoa, what was that!
"Girls don't go for impulsive men ya know"
"well, the girl i need does " he gave a wink. I was swooned.
Sean clearly felt it too but he was a good pretender. I liked him that way.
"Oh no, its not here"
I snapped out of my "sean fantasy" (that's what i'll call it from now on) and looked at sean, lifting my eyebrows showing clear confusion.
"The last page, it's been ripped away."
"what!"
I grabbed the journal to see for myself and there it was, the missing last page of the journal. Some words had been left behind though : The rev... form...
yup this was definitely what we were looking for, and now it's gone.
Just then, there was a loud bang coming from the trapdoor. We both jumped and shifted our heads up, towards the trapdoor where water was starting to seep in slowly.
the trapdoor was almost right above us and as i looked closely, it was not just water that was seeping through the door, it had a slightly darker colour, like red...like Blood.
