An Awkward Encounter

I am awake, I stare at the ceiling for a while before jumping out of bed. I stand up and walk to the bathroom, I do not need to use my walking stick at home. For the past three years non of the furniture in our house has been moved.

When my mom came up with the idea, as usual I did not think it a good one but now I've learned to consider. After all, I now know this house so well I don't need help to navigate around.

After brushing my teeth and freshening up, I walk down the hall to the kitchen. Even before I reach I can smell the sweet aroma, of a perfect english breakfast. ' Good morning, father? ' I say as I walk into the kitchen. ' Morning kiddo, how are you today. Got any plans for the weekend. '

He sounds so full of life as he talks. I can tell that he is wearing the white apron that mom bought him when we first moved to this house some eight years ago.

His words ring bells in my head but I can't seem to remember what it is. Then it hits me, I arranged to meet with Alice in the park today. Alice is my best friend, I met her two years ago when I started going to the school.

' Actually dad, Alice and I agreed to meet in the park today. ' I say these words with joy knowing that I won't be spending another Saturday alone at home.

Alice and I have got similar but totally different conditions. She is slowly becoming deaf but at least she has her hearing aid to help her get through it for a while. And she won't be completely deaf for a couple more years.

But our oxymoron conditions are exactly what brought us together and made us best friends.

' Oh!... Then in that case I can drop you off on my way to work. ' He sounds shocked as he says these words. But I can understand why he would be surprised, after moms death I secluded myself from everyone. Everyone inclusive of Alice.

He walks up to me and puts my breakfast in front of me. I look up at him and say ' Thanks for the food. '

After breakfast I get one of my jackets and place my walking stick in one of the pockets. Then I walk to the kitchen quick and wait for my dad from there.

I can see him coming and I am able to tell that he has changed his clothes because he is now wearing black.

' You look good! ' I say to him, though I am not able to see most of the details. ' Thank you very much. ' He replies and looks at him self before giving himself a nod of approval, he grabs my hand and we head out.

As we drive, I look out the window and see the different coloured cars pass by, although the majority are white, grey or black. Their is the occasional blue and red but more colors don't make any less boring than it already is. The drive is short and silent but we are there now, so it really doesn't matter.

'Should I wait with you till Alice arrives? ' He tentatively asks not to sure whether or not it's a good idea to leave a "partially " blind girl all by herself.

' I'll be fine dad, just come pick me up at 1pm. ' He looks at me and considers for a short moment then says ' I love you. ' I smile and say, ' I love you too dad. ' I see him walk to his car and watch as he drives away.

I reach into my pocket for my walking stick as I begin to walk, I finally grab hold of it pull it out of my pocket. Before I can stretch it out, I hit into something and loose my balance.

I know I am gonna fall backwards and there is no way of me avoiding from happening. My eyes are closed shut and my body is fully braced for impact, but strangely I don't feel at a parallel with the ground.

I open my eyes and I see a guy standing directly in front of me, only inches away from me. His hands gripped on my arm just below my shoulders, he pulls me back to my feet and I realise it wasn't an object but a person whom I bumped into.

' Watch where you're going. You could seriously get hurt. ' He sounds irritated as he says these words, but I am not paying attention to anything he is saying I am still trying to process what just happened.

He let's go of me and adds a little push to it out of anger. He starts to walk away then realisation hits me, I dropped my walking stick during the impact.

' WAIT! ' I shout in his direction, turning my head to see if he is still within earshot. Luckily he never got far.

' What now? ' he sounds even more irritated than before. I hesitate before I speak, ' Could you please help me find my walking stick? I seem to have dropped it when we collided earlier. ' He doesn't utter a word and I can tell that he is not moving either.

I hear him as he about to talk but he is cut off by a familiar voice ' Hey Liz, sorry I am late. ' It's Alice, I turn around to see her in bright yellow.

She is wearing a dress that's just above her knees. I see her bend down, she then stands and hands over my walking stick. ' Thanks, ' I say as I feel her place my walking stick in my hands.

' Who is he? ' I hear her ask out of curiosity. BeforeI can answer he says ' I think I better be off, ' and he walks away.

I stretch out my walking stick to it's full length and I grab Alice's free hand. In her other hand she holds a picnic basket and a blanket.

' That was weird... Care to explain? ' I look at her as soon as she says the words and I begin to explain what just happened.

' He is really rude, you should have given him a piece of your mind. In fact, we should find him and make him apologise. ' She goes on for a few more minutes until we finally find a good spot on the grass, where the sunlight is in full view.

We lay down the blanket and sit on it, I lay on my back and enjoy the warmth of the sun as it kisses my face.

' But he was pretty cute, now that I think about it. ' These words catch me by surprise, ' What do you mean by that? ' I ask her out of shock, just a moment ago she was talking about plans for revenge and now she's calling him cute. ' I mean just that, he is a cute boy. ' I look look at her and smile and before I know it we are both laughing.

We talk and laugh for the rest of the morning and at noon we decide to take a walk. On the walk we meet one of my former teachers. ' Now, if I may ask. How did the blind girl and the deaf girl find themselves walking together in the park. ' He asks this in as though he were interviewing us.

I turn to face his direction and respond with a hint of pride to my tone, ' " Can two walk together, except they be agreed." ' I see his hand pointed in my direction and I know that he is pointing a finger at me probably with a smile on his face.

I hear him give a brief laugh and he talks again. ' You got me! Amos 3:3 if I am not mistaken. I used that one as an example during a lesson once. I never thought you would use it against me one day. '

' Thy word have I hid in my heart. ' I say to him. Alice gives a little giggle and we part ways with him. After about an hour, my dad comes to pick me up. I hug Alice goodbye and we part ways.
