If I make any spelling or grammar mistakes please don't tell meI was 16. My parents were dead. My brother and I were living in an orphanage with no were else to go. The orphanage was a nice place but no one really paid much attention to me and my brother. It was his birthday but only he and I cared. Everyone else was too busy with their own lives. That's how it always was every kid for them self trying to get adopted and the staff trying to get the kids adopted.
I was able to steal a small cake from the staff only area and I found a candle, but I had nothing to light it with. So he had a cupcake with an old unlit candle stuck in it as a cake for his 12th birthday, just great. At lease he had something.
My brother and I huddle on the floor around the cupcake. I was just about to sing happy birthday when the door to our room was flung open.
"You two, there is some one here who would like to look into adopting you." Said the head lady at the orphanage
She grabbed us roughly by the arm and dragged us out of the room. She took us down the hallway and into the 'Adopted Me' room. That's what all the kids called it.
Inside there was a tall thin man. He had glasses that were too big. He looked to be in his late 30s. Black hair and his face was kind of friendly.
"Hello my name is Mathew, I'm going to be your new dad." The man said as he leaned down over us. "So what are your names?"
"My names Jack." Exclaimed my brother with excitement "Today is my birthday Mr"
"How nice." Mathew replied warmly
"And what's your name?" Mathew asked me
"My names Sophie." I replied timidly
"What a pretty name." said Mathew
He looked up at the head lady.
"As you know I only want one child, not two." Mathew said coldly
"So I'll take the boy." Snapped Mathew
That's when my world shattered.
The next morning I woke to a room with only me in it. I froze, I was about to yell my brother's name when I remembered, he was gone. That man Mathew adopted him. My only family left was gone.
I got up and started my day as normal, just without my brother. Life doesn't stop just because he was gone. As normal the lunch line was busy, it doesn't stop being busy just because he was gone. The tables were crowded as normal, it doesn't stop just because he was gone.
By the time I went back to bed I had said in my mind 'just because he was gone' about 100 times.
I curled up in a small ball and tried to fall asleep. Then a stone flew through an open window and landed next to my head. I got up and look out the window to find a street brawl of epic proportions going on. I knew I had to do something. So I closed my window. Then I put on black jeans and my black hoodie and a pair of thick black socks.
I crept out of my room into a dark hallway full of shadows, only lit by small windows that let in the eerie moon light. I kept to the shadows, so I was hidden, in case someone came out into the hallway. I quickly made my way to the front door.
The street brawl was at the back of the orphanage. I went out and around to the back. Again keeping to the shadows. I was now used to creeping out of the orphanage in just a pair of socks. It does get so boring in there I haft to find some way of entertaining myself, when I can't talk with my brother.
Once I reached the brawl, there was a guy covered in blood and unconscious. The fight was over the others had fled. I had to get the man awake. There was a tap near. So I dragged the man over and put his head under the tap. I turned the tap on. Cold water came rushing out of the tap. It splashed over the man's head. His eyes sprung open. I turned off the tap, the man sat up and looked angrily at me.
"That was cold!" He yelled
I put my finger to my mouth and pointed at the orphanage. He nodded in response, he stood and grabbed my arm, and he started to drag me. I tried to shake him off but he was much stronger than me. He took me to a small apartment he unlocked the door and we went in.
"Why did you drag me here?" I asked sounding annoyed
"Well if I let you go I wouldn't have the chance to thank you for not leaving me unconscious." Replied the man "My name is Zack, what's yours?"
"My name is Sophie." I replied
"So why were you even out on the street? I mean you look to be 15, and that's too young to live alone. So you ether snuck out of your house, your parents aloud you to go some were to do something, or your parents don't care where you are or what you do." Asked Zack
"I don't think I have to answer that." I replied
"True, but now I'm even more curious." Said Zack
"Whatever."
I left that house, and went back to the orphanage. I was about to walk through the door when...
"So that's it."
I heard Zack's voice and turned around.
"Do you like living there, because I kind of owe you. So if you like I could get you out and you could live a life of never ending excitement." Whispered Zack
"That would be awesome." I replied whispering so not to wake anyone in the orphanage
In my head I was saying I will see my brother again.
