The Next Day

Chresanto August
"You're not supposed to be the nervous one." I said to Jacob who had been antsy and fidgeting in his seat the whole ride to his parents' house. He wouldn't even get out of my car. "I've met Karen and Joey already, remember?"

"I know that, it's just-" he sighed. "Not everyone would approved of who I brought home. I know they met you last night but-"

"Hey, hey," I pecked his lips, shutting him up. He was overthinking things. "it's gonna be fine. We have nothing to worry about."

"Mama, I wan' eat." Jamie said from the backseat "Well, I can't let my baby starve to death because of my uneasy nerves." He sighed, opening the door getting out and going to the backseat to get Jamie from his carseat. He held my hand with a tight grip as we walked into the house. Kids running around chasing each other, adults chatting about nothing in particular or just catching up.

"Cookie!" Jamie squealed spotting a little boy reaching for a plate of cookies that sat on a table with other snacks and refreshments

"Cookie!" Jamie squealed spotting a little boy reaching for a plate of cookies that sat on a table with other snacks and refreshments. It was seconds away from falling on the floor. "That is a whooping waiting to happen."

"Finally, you're here." I heard in a distance. "Mommy wants your butt in the kitchen. Hi, boogie baby... Hey, Chresanto, how's it goin'?" Jai smiled, lightly punching my arm.

"Why can't you go help her? I don't wanna leave Chres all by himself." Jacob put Jamie down letting him run away with the other kids. "I'm fine, go help."

"Are you sure-" "Yes." I chuckled "I am perfectly fine, go cook. If I want you I will come and get you." I pushed him towards the kitchen giving him a pat on the butt.

"My Jakey!" I jumped hearing Aunt Janice shriek as I tied on an apron, she quickly pulled me in for a hug. She pulled away holding my shoulders doing a once over. "I haven't seen you since you were fat and pregnant." She grinned

"I missed you too, Aunt Janice." I said with a small smile. "You snap back pretty fast, it took me 5 years to get off my fat ass and get into the gym after I had your big headed little cousin over there." She pointed at her 12 year old son and second child Ahmad who had his eyes glued to the iPhone in his hands, playing some type of action game.

We sat at the table, she stirred the large bowl of fruit punch as we talked. "So, Karen tells me you've been seeing a certain someone that's got your bouncing around here like you're on your way to see the wizard." I shot Karen a glare and she smiled innocently handing me a bowl of unpeeled potatoes and walking away.
