Number Twenty-Two; Chapter 2

A D I S I  K H A N

Adisi Khan shivered as the icy blast of wind hit her. It was 5:45 AM and orange rays of light were starting to peek out on the horizon. She slammed her car door shut and made the short walk to the gym. As usual, Coach Curry was in the gym barking orders. Everyone turned their heads when she walked through the doors. Nayelis Dane gave a round of applause.

"This is the first time I've seen you show up early for anything." She teased. Adisi rolled her eyes though it was true. Practice didn't officially start until six.

"Khan, get changed. Now." Coach Curry hissed. Adisi almost forgot about the 5'9 woman who was watching them. She followed orders and made way for the locker room until a familiar voice called her from the bleachers.

"A.K.!" Adisi turned to see Coach Curry who was paying attention to Nayelis and her faulty serves. So, Adisi walked over to the bleachers.

"Seth?" Adisi peared at the two men who were in all black hoodies and tinted shades. Only one of them took off their shades: Seth Curry.

"Hey girl! Haven't seen you in a while."

"Same for you. You left me to suffer without your crappy jokes." Adisi smiled at the memory of last season.

"I've been busy. Syd said you've been kicking ass all season."

      "The season just started."

"I can still school you in basketball though." Seth stated.

"Oh hell no, Mr. NBA player. If I do remember clearly, it was I who made that three and not you." Adisi defended herself. She crossed her arms and looked straight into Seth's hazel eyes.

"Damn girl. So after this little practice is over, you and me are gonna play some one-on-one." Seth held up his hands.

"Whatever. Let me get changed before your sister blows a cap on my ass." It was true since more girls started walking in.

"You go do that," Adisi ignored Seth's last comment and jogged to the locker room unseen by Coach.

"What kind of dig was that, Khan?... Stronger bump, Mathews!... Dammit! Time out!" Sydel screamed from watching the girls. Her two brothers had no idea why she was so pissed. Everyone seemed to be doing fine.

"What kind of shitty offensive play was that? If you play like that, I can promise you that this team will not win the next game. Khan, talk to your team before I lose my mind." Sydel hissed.

Adisi bit her lip and sighed. The faces of her team showed the exhaustion from giving their best that just wasn't enough. She tried to find the words that would be inspiring enough for the girls around her.

"Um. Well. We all want Curry off our asses." A murmur of agreement sounded. "So let's fuck it up. We gon' run the last play, but way cleaner and Matthews, do a running serve when we start. That's it really. 1-2-3 HARD WORK!" The college girls all grinned at each other. Then, Matthews served the ball.

"Nice comeback girls. Game on Thursday. Be ready. Team on three 1-2-3 TEAM!" Coach Curry dismissed the girls, only Adisi stayed behind.

"C'mon Seth! Time to get beat by a girl!" Adisi called. She retied her ponytail and wiped her sweaty forehead with a rag. Seth got up with a basketball in hand. The man who Adisi had yet to meet followed him.

"A.K., let me introduce you to my brother, Steph." Seth dribbled the ball to where Adisi was standing. She gave a groan.

"Do we have to do this? I'll met him after I get bragging rights." She didn't watch much basketball and therefore didn't know who the man was.

"Excuse me, Seth. My name is Steph Curry." Steph took off his shades and looked her straight in her eyes. He expected the usual shrill of joy and shock, but Adisi payed him almost no mind.

"Cool. I'm Adisi Khan. Or Khan. Or A.K.. Or Adisi. Call me whatever...But I have a game to play with Seth, so we'll catch up or something." Without another word, Adisi stole the ball from Seth and started the game. Meanwhile, Steph stood there, partially in shock. It wasn't like he was in his feelings or anything, but how come Adisi didn't fall over her feet when the met? He shrugged his shoulders and watched the girl compete and lose (she put up a good fight) to his brother. But it's whatever.
