Cold and gray.
That's what Alexander's days are like.
No color to his days. Nothing but the same old routine.
Chapter one. Paint me a clear blue sky.
He squinted at the sun coming through the blinds woke him up. Groggily he looked over to the clock. 9:45 a.m. it read. He walked through the silent house and into the kitchen to find something to eat and settled for a bowl of strawberries. Knowing he needed to call his mom to check in, Alexander pulled out his phone and called his mom. The familiar voicemail recording started: " You have reached the voicemail of Sandy Burk. I can't come to the phone right now due to work. Leave a message after the beep." BEEP. Alexander left the usual voice mail, "Hey its me I'm up and moving uh...yeah... so call when you can I guess. Bye." sighing Alexander put down the phone.
School starts again tomorrow. Everything was prepared. "What's the point in going? She doesn't know if I go or not?" Alexander wondered to himself. He walked into the art room in the back of the house. He got out a canvas and set it up on the easel. He looked over at his paints and tried to pick out the colors he wanted to use. As usual, all the colors seemed the same to him. They were dull and grey. So randomly choosing three colors that labels read purple, green, and blue, he grabbed a paint brush and let his hands take the lead.
A hour later he took his final product off the easel and sat it in front of the window to dry. Sighing, he walked over to his bookshelf and choose a book and settled for The Complete Book Of Poems Of Edgar Allen Poe.
The day went by in a flash and at 11:30pm that night Alexander's phone started to ring. He jumped but quickly realized it was his phone. Forgetting were he had layed it he went searching for the ringing phone. He found the phone on the island in the kitchen. His phone lit up with the name, Giver of Birth. He inhaled deeply and answered. "Hello?" Alexander answered in a fake happy tone. "Hi Alex, honey I don't have much time." Alexander heard his mom tiredly state through the phone. "Right, uh well school starts tomorrow." Alexander attemped to make conversation. Trying to get his mother to care. " Ah that's right it does doesn't it-" She was interrupted by a coworker saying that the meeting was starting soon. "Alexander honey, I'm sorry I have to go good luck tomorrow love you" before Alexander could return the gesture the line went dead. He just set the phone on the charger and went to bed.
The next morning he woke up to the screaming of the alarm. He got up and got dressed in the high school uniform of a white collared button up, khaki pants and a green tie. He grabbed his bag and head out to the bus stop. When he got there, there was a redhead boy already waiting. Alexander walked up and just stood looking at the road not caring to start a conversation.
"Hey man, What's up?"
Alexander heard the redhead say. Alexander turned toward him "me?" He asked looking around to see no one else. This guy just greeted him like he knew Alexander forever. The other guy laughed "I'm Shaun what's your name?" Great. Guess the conversation is starting anyway. "I'm uh, Alexander" Alexander couldn't help the seemingly emotionless voice he had. Shaun looked at Alexander confused," I Guess your not much of a talker eh? Well, that's okay. I can talk enough for the both of us! So can I call you Alex? OH or A-dog or Xander or Lex." Alexander shook his head " No I'm just Alexander" Shaun just grinned, "Well we have all year to come up with a good nickname for you." Seconds later the bus pulled up. Inside there was practically no one. Just a girl looking out the window in the back and a boy reading in the third seat. So three other people if you count the bus driver who looks like she's too old to still be driving. The girl in the back looked up briefly and the continued to stare out the window. Shaun nudged Alexander and said ,"That girls cute don't you think?" Alexander just shrugged and took a seat across from the boy reading. Shaun plopped down right next to Alexander even though there were plenty of empty seats. "Why are you sitting with me?" Shaun let out a loud laugh, "I don't know! We're now it's what friends do!" Alexander just shrugged and looked out the window. He must have fallen asleep at some point because next thing he knew he was being shook by a eager looking Shaun. "Dude come on we're here!" Alexander grabbed his bag and followed Shaun. When they walked into the large school it was filled with people unlike their bus. The cheerleading squad was chanting and talking to each other, the jocks were leaning against the stairs and water fountains. Clubs were lined up behind their booths or handing out fliers. Shaun made his way over to the cheerleaders and Alexander trailed behind him. "Hey ladies. Anyone in need of a man?" Almost all of them scattered immediately pretending to vomit. A small but intimidating cheerleader remained. She had shorter hair and a bow in her hair. She pushed her red hair out of the way of her face and crossed her arms before saying ,"Could you stop being so gross Shaun. No one on the team wants you so you can go."
Shaun rolled his eyes and shrugged, "Whatever did you get the bus note from mom?" Alexander tuned back in when he heard that, " You guys are siblings?" They both turned towards Alexander and laughed. Then in unison said, "Yeah were twins!" then looked at each other then scoweled. The girl said, "By the way I'm Emma Cook. Why on earth would you be friends with shaun he's the loudest and most obnoxious person?" She asked obviously teasing. However all Alexander did was shrug. "Shaun is he..." Emma trailed off. Shaun didn't understand at first and then it clicked. "No! Wait I'm...not sure.." Shaun turned to Alexander, " Are you like...do you have..uh" Shaun kept trying to not be offensive. Alexander just said "uh no I'm not. I just dont talk a lot." Emma and Shaun just nodded.
The bell rang and everyone started rushing to their classes."Lets get to class. I'll see ya when I see ya! " Shaun practically screamed. Alexander walked through the hallway and up the stairs to his first period class in room 305c. When they stepped in, the air smelled like Christmas. He noticed Shaun and Emma were in here as well. Shaun jumped up and ran to Alexander. "HEY MAN. so my sister has this friend who is SMOKING hot her name is Mandy Walker." Shaun nodded to whom Alexander assumed was Mandy Walker. She smiled at Shaun then ran up to Emma and the two girls hugged and started talking about their summer.
"Our parents took Shaun and I on a cruise to the Bahamas." Emma told Mandy. Mandy gasped, "Whoa! That's so cool! All we did was go to the beach. It was fun but you know, it wasn't a cruise to the Bahamas." Emma laughed and looked over at my bored expression before saying "Oh! By the way this is Alexander-" She was interrupted . "Burk? Alexander Burk?" Alexander looked up from the reuniting girls to the intruding voice from the back of the class "Yeah?" Alexander looked around until his eyes connected to a pair of green eyes. Alexander shook his head not knowing what that green was. And as fast as it was here the green faded into the familiar dull grey. Alexander walked towards the boy who called him over. "How do you know my name." Alexander bluntly asked thinking they knew who his mother was. "Your seat is right next to mine. There's a name tag." The boy replied gesturing to the desk. Alexander nodded and set his book bag down on the chair of his desk. He saw the name on the opposite side of his name was Timothy Rodgers and saw Shaun Cook on the desk in front of him. "Hey Shaun your right here" Alexander called to Shaun. Shaun spun around "Hey hey hey look who's talkin! I'm coming." Shaun walked over and set his bag down on his desk ," Hey, Timothy I see you met Alexander." Timothy nodded, "yep " The teacher walked in. He Set his stuff up then asked everyone to take their seats. Emma and Mandy had seats right behind the three boys. Alexander looked over at Timothy then Shaun then Emma then Mandy. And for the first time in what seemed like a century, Alexander found himself slightly happy.
