Sam

‘Sam?’ Steve called softly. I groaned and opened my eyes, my head pounding. I blinked furiously, seeing Steve leaning over me, worriedly. I looked around, sighing thankfully seeing that I was back in my own room. Steve sighed when I looked back to him, frowning.

‘Please stop passing out.’ He said with a sigh, before lying down on the bed beside me. I frowned again, confused.

‘What…? What h…?’ I began, but Steve picked up.

‘What happened?’ he offered, looking up at me softly, as I propped myself up on my elbows.

‘Well, Bruce said that you passed out by suffocation, so we’re guessing that Alex attacked you again?’ he said, wincing slightly. I frowned, processing that for a moment, before falling back onto the bed. I should probably just tell him.

‘To be honest, he’s kind of had a constant stream of attacks running since I woke up. I think he’s pissed off that I didn’t die.’ I told him, looking thoughtfully at the silvery ceiling. Steve sighed, rolling onto his side, looking at me. His eyes searched my face for something, but I was afraid to look over to him.

‘You have to stop letting him in. I don’t want to lose you.’ He said quietly. I huffed, still watching the ceiling.

‘It’s not like I have a choice in the matter, Steve.’ I sighed, and turned onto my side, facing him, putting my elbow on the pillow, and resting my head on my hand.

‘Steve, he’s colossally stronger than me.’ I shrugged. ‘Sure, put us in a hand-to-hand combat, or face-to-face combat with weapons, we’re pretty evenly matched. He’d win at hand-to-hand, and I’d win with weapons. But put our… abilities up against each other…?’ I sighed and shook my head.

‘It’s like throwing glass spheres at each other. Sometimes one will smash, sometimes the other. Sometimes both will, and on a very rare occasion, neither will. The only things that keep me going are; my stubbornness, and you guys.’ I told him. He sighed, sitting up slightly, and holding his arms out.

I leaned into his embrace happily, welcoming his warmth. We both sighed, relaxing into each other.

‘I mean, it’s like a warzone, inside of my head. I have no control over it. All I can do, is just…’ I sighed, leaning my head back, against his shoulder, as I entwined our fingers. ‘Grin and bear it.’
