'How did the meeting go ,Diana?'
'Did he agree to us living in this house?'
These were the very first questions asked by her mother to her, when she entered the house.
"No, I couldn't meet him." She lied.
"Why not?" Her mother asked.
"He is a busy person mother. He had an important meeting to get to, so he left."
Diana hated lying but she was not sharing the shameful proposal Nikos had presented her to her mother.
"Yes, the boy has reached new heights. If this was the case five years back, we would have happily allowed you to marry him."
Diana couldn't believe her mother. Five years back ,she had strictly refused to acknowledge her relation with him and kept persuading her to marry Brandon, her childhood friend. Her parents constant nagging had forced her to marry Brandon considering it was a good business merger.
"Why, just because he is rich now. I can't believe your selfish nature mother. Every time you stoop a grade low than I expect."
Smack.
"Let me remind you that I am your mother, girl. Behave."
Palming her red cheek Diana stood up. "There isn't a day I don't regret it , mother." She left her fuming mother in the living area and ran upstairs into her room.
Diana laid down on the bed on her stomach and didn't bother changing. Tears rolled down her cheeks, wetting the pillow. It pained her that her mother never supported her, ever. Her relation with her mother was not good. They never shared a bond like a normal mother daughter would. Her mother was strict and always busy.
Tiredness took a toll on her health leading her to close her eyes. Sleep welcomed her with open arms.
Sun rays seeped into her room through the small gap created between the curtains, disturbing her peaceful slumber. Diana got up from the bed and made her way out into the living room. Strangely, she heard no voice of her bickering parents like they usually do early in the morning. She stepped into the kitchen and found a note tucked on the wall of the refrigerator.
'Sorry dear, got an urgent call from your uncle Louis. He is in a bad state, his health is deteriorating. Had to leave early in the morning. Would return in two days. Be safe'
After reading it, she kept it on the nearby table. Getting hold of a pan ,she started making her coffee as it usually calmed her after having a mental breakdown. It was around
10 am when she heard the ringing of the bell ,indicating someone was at the door. She had just taken a bath , her body clad in a night dress, hair rolled in a towel. Removing the towel , she hastily approached the door.To her utter shock, Nikos stood at the door along with a few other people she didn't know, his bodyguards standing behind them ,covering them up from any danger.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
He simply raised an eyebrow in return. "If you step aside, these gentlemen over here could wrap up their work as soon as possible."
"What work?" She asked.
"Measurements of the house, they need to have an accurate data for the construction of my new restaurant." He said.
