Morning came too fast. Before I knew it I was hitting my snooze button on my alarm clock that was obnoxiously beeping. I stumbled out of bed and winced as I felt the sharp pain I my stomach where I had been kicked. I made my way to my vanity and grimaced when I saw my reflection. Most of the left side of my face was covered in a purplish black bruise. A broken sob left my lips. I sank to the floor. How, how was this fair. What had I done wrong. I tried so hard to be the perfect daughter but it was never enough. Maybe my dad was right, maybe I was worthless. If only my mom was here. My father wasn't always like this. It only started when he began drinking. Right after mom had died. She had been in an accident. Drunk driver hit her head on. She died on impact. After that, dad went ballistic. He couldn't handle it so he had a drink a night, which slowly turned to drinking constantly. I avoided him as much as possible but sometimes, like last night, were just unavoidable. I grabbed something off my vanity and threw it at the wall just to release some anger. I heard the distinct sound of glass shattering. I looked up to see a picture frame face down on the carpet, small shards of glass scattered around it. I gasped and picked up the frame. I cried harder as I realized what picture I had thrown. It was one of me and my mom together a week before she had died. "I'm sorry mom." I weakly whispered to quiet air around me. With a shaking hand I picked up the picture and set it on my dresser. I took a deep breath and looked back in the mirror. I let out a laugh. Wow I look like shit I thought to myself. My eyes were puffy and red and the half of my face that wasn't bruised was now all red and splotchy. Shaking my head I reached for my cover up to try and do some damage control.

"You were almost late." My friend Bentley hissed to me as I slid into my first period seat. I gave her a look as if to say 'really? I didn't know that' She rolled her eyes and flicked her fiery red hair over her shoulder. Suddenly she looked back over at me, concern filling her large green eyes. "What's wrong with your face?" She asked. "What do you mean"I asked hoping she would drop it. "I mean the fact that it looks horribly bruised." She responded. Damn, I knew she wouldn't leave it. "I tripped last night and face planted into the wall." I lied smoothly. After years I learned how to lie easily. It still hurt though, lying to Bentley. She was my best friend who was supposed to know everything and yet she didn't know the biggest thing in my life. But telling her was dangerous. My father swore that if I uttered a single word he would kill both me and whoever I told. I couldn't take that risk. I would just have to try and stick it out for a couple more years, but even then I didn't know where I would go. If by some miracle I got into college I couldn't afford it. I had no other living relatives. I was trapped. I was-
"Adalyn?" Bentley called waving a hand in front of my face. I jumped slightly as I was jerked out of my thoughts. I shook my head and got up to follow her to second hour.

School passed slowly, seeming to drag on forever. I was grabbing books out of my locker when I heard a smooth voice next to my locker.
"Hey beautiful." It said. I figured it wasn't for me so I simply ignored it.
"Now now now. Weren't you ever taught it's rude to ignore someone?" They asked as I felt a hand slowly turn my head to face them. I blinked in astonishment as I came face to face with Cameron Johnson. Everyone knows Cameron. He was the football star. The dreamy hottie that the girls swooned over. He had a smile that could melt your heart and eyes to make you weak in the knees. He could sweet talk his way out of anything. He was also one of the biggest man whores in the world. He had to have been with nearly every girl in this school twice already. Which was precisely why I wouldn't fall for his game. "Weren't you told it's wrong to touch people without their permission?" I snapped back. He blinked obviously stunned by me not swooning and bowing at his feet. "Feisty I like it." He said with a smirk. I rolled my eyes. "Look pretty boy, I really don't have time for you. Go find some pathetic trashy whore to sleep with. And if somehow you can't find someone with open legs in this school your rich enough I'm sure you can afford one."I spat at him before slamming my locker closed.
"You think I'm pretty?" He asked cockily. Really? Was that the only part of that speech he got? He is unbelievable. I shook my head in exasperation and spun on my heel walking away. As I was waking I noticed the school's queen bee, Jacqueline, glaring at me. Strange, I thought I haven't done anything to her.
"Come on honey one date? Could be the best day of your life." I scoffed. Was his head really that big? I mean how is one person that narcissistic?
"Answer me one question first." I said and he smiled thinking he won. "What's my name?" I asked innocently cocking my head to the side. He blinked taken aback. He smiled again. "Ashley." He said with confidence and ease. Tool. I shook my head. "Nope sorry lover boy." I said with a pitying smile and walked away. "Alex, Brittany, Sam?" He called desperately down the hall. I quickly walked away to my car shaking as my confidence slowly wore out. I had no idea what got into me. I'm never like that, I'm the shy quiet girl not the cocky bitch. I had just reached for the handle of my car door when I felt nails dig into my forearm and spun my around so I was pinned with my back to the car. I flinched and braced myself for the pain that I knew was coming. When I felt no impacting blow I peeled my eyes open and was face to face with Jacqueline. "I saw you talking to Cameron." She said with an emotion I couldn't register. I must had looked confused because she scoffed at me. "Please don't even try to deny it. Look just keep this in mind. If you know what's best for you, stay away from Cameron." She stated cooly but I swear I saw a flicker of hurt flash through her eyes. Before I had a chance to respond she had already started waking away, her blonde of hair blowing back in the wind. I shook my head and shakily climbed into my car to head home
