First rule of the universe- things can always get worse

I passed through my remaining two subjects (history and biology) in a daze. My mind refused to stay on task and my hand refused to oblige and write down notes, which I was positive I was going to regret.

Things like notes tend to help one's test grade.

I never saw the mysterious Jasper Black the rest of the school day.

"And Kyle was totally flirting with me, Cass, you REALLY should have seen it. And then..." My best friend Jazz suddenly stopped her mindless chatter. "Oh. Oh my," she said. I yanked my backpack from my locker.

"What?" I asked, not looking at her.

"Cass," she yanked on my arm.

"What?" I scanned my locker for my history books. It was probably one of the football players walking by. Oh! There's my history book. I dug it out from behind my biology book and pulled it out if my locker. I needed to study tonight, since no obvious learning took place today in class.

"Cassidy!" She gave my arm an even sharper pull, causing my books to fall from my hand and fall to the ground to my right.

I snapped my head in her direction "what the hell?" I emphasized at her. What had gotten into her ?

She jerks her head in a harsh movement in my direction.

When I still stare at her, confused, she rolls her eyes and mouths "behind you!"

I swallow hard. I slowly but surely turn to see, you guessed it, Jasper Black. He had this half smile playing on his face, and it took me quite a few moments to realize he was holding my books. "Oh!" I said, going to take them from him.

I grabbed the books with both hands, waiting for him to let go, but instead, he pulled the books closer, bringing me closer as well.

I gasped at the sudden closeness, his hot breath yet again broke across my skin. "I wanted to apologize for today," he said quietly. This wasn't what I was expecting. He released the book and started to walk away from me.

"W-w-what about our assignment?" I stuttered, although I was sure he couldn't hear me.

Although I got no answer to my question, he turned to me and winked.

I sighed in frustration and shoved the books in my backpack and zipped it up in a hurry.

"Wow," jazz opens her mouth wide. "Talk about a sexy man,"

I was silent.

"You can't tell me you don't think so too," I started walking and she ran a few steps to keep up with my swift pace.

"He's ... He's scary, Jay. He's really scary," I shook my head, thinking of the way his eyes made me feel. "There's something really bad about him, and I can't tell what yet. But I'll figure it out," I promised her.

"You hop on that," Jazz called to me as she stopped, turned around and started heading back to her locker. "But in the meantime, enjoy that sexy, scary, mysterious man, got it?" I rolled my eyes as we went seperate ways, but I smiled at her. We may be polar opposites, but she is my best friend.

===========================

"Bye, I'll see you later tonight!" Sammy yelled to me. He was the freshman student I was tutoring in just about very subject.

"Bye Sammy," I replied, a great deal less enthusiastic than him. I was agitated at the kid for being SO stupid. I had to go over three different theories in math, and science. And I knew the librarian staying late shift in our city library was equally as mad at the both of us. She always blasts the music when no one was around to hear it. I'd be mad too if I had to stay up and listen to us both.

So, without saying, when I got out of the library it was dark. Sammy's family was waiting for him in front, and they gave me a friendly wave out the window and I smiled politely back, despite my mood.

I walked briskly across the parking lot, shivering in the cold wind that ruffled my hair. I dug around in my purse for my keys as I approached my car. I stuck the keys in the door of my 1960 Volkswagen and yanked the door open, closing it quickly behind me and jamming the key into the ignition, desperate to get the heat going.

I tried to turn the key and start the engine, but... It wouldn't. I tried again. "No, no, no! Come on buggy start!" I begged my car. It didn't reply.

I sighed, resting my head on the steering wheel. I didn't have a cellphone. I didn't have a car. Hell, I didn't even wear a jacket.

I got my keys from the engine and shoved them in my purse. I was so mad my eyes started to brim with tears. I wiped them angrily away before I hopped out of the car and slammed the door shut with all my might.

I kicked the door in the midst of my anger. That wasn't very smart. Almost as soon after, my toe started to throb in pain.

I started walking. I hugged myself and headed in the direction I would usually start driving.

Not even two minutes into my walk I was shivering, teeth chattering. I sighed in frustration. "Can this night get any worse?" I threw my question out into the wind.

"First rule of the universe," I hear a voice behind me say. "Things can always get worse,"

And I screamed. Jasper Black stood not an inch behind me.
